Cultural diversity, what is cultural diversity, and how does it affect the work place? I believe that there are people out there that still may not have a true understanding as to the exact meaning of cultural diversity, or they assume that it is something that only pertains to people who are of a different back ground as the next person. Cultural diversity encases more than just people who come from different backgrounds. According to www.EHow.com Cultural diversity is a peaceful coexistence of multiple cultures or societies in an organization (e.g. workplace or university.) A culture can be based on ethnicity (Hispanic, Asian), gender (male, female), age, sexual orientation or religion. Cultural diversity is also referred to as multiculturalism. Two of the key aspects of cultural diversity are coexistence without conflict and exchange of ideas. As a nation we have come a long way as far as cultural diversity within the workplace is concerned. (Hunter, 2009) However, this is still a complaint that can be heard within corporate America even through all this growth and change. People still have closed views of cultural diversity, instead of embracing the diversity, they have and continue to have a blind eye and are prejudice to people are different in some way, whether is age, race, sex or any other form of cultural difference. However, there is good news, companies are becoming more proactive and taking steps that will train employees and offer guidance to help overcome such diversities. If you take a more broadened look into a company’s insides, you can tell whether they are utilizing cultural diversity to their advantage or not. If a company embraces cultural diversity rather than making it a tool for ignorance the company’s growth will most likely surpass other companies that was unwilling to change their ignorant ways. If you part of a work place that

Currently I live in a community of approximately 21,785 people according to the 2010 US Census. Herriman, which is about 20 miles southwest of Salt Lake City has grown by leaps and bounds over the last twelve years. Herriman was founded as a farming community in 1849 and was incorporated in 1999. Herriman still feels like a small town, an idea which is held onto by its community leaders and population. I noticed while in researching the varying statistics for my city that I look like about 90% of the population. At 38, I am a little bit older than the average age of 27, but I am Caucasian, as are the majority of the residents. I noted with interest, during our last mayoral race, the current mayor spent the time to go out and knock on doors introducing himself to everyone. He made a significant impact on me as he stood and visited with my family and seemed to have the same values and ideals that I do. I cannot say that I have noticed a large difference in how minorities are treated by members of my community. In fact, in my local neighborhood we have a few families of varying ethnicities which have been welcomed and encouraged to teach about their homelands. It has been fascinating to watch and learn about the cultures from which they came and even to try some of the more traditional foods.…

In simple terms, cultural diversity can be defined as the level of diversity or difference in a given society. Societies that display high levels of diversity exhibit many differences across that population. Differences can include skin color, religious affiliation, cultural practices and other ethnic beliefs and customs. Immigration is a major factor in determining the level of diversity that a given society is exposed to. Ever since the dawn of time, humans have traveled the globe in curiosity to interact with other civilizations. These interactions were either well intentioned to share and form partnerships, or militaristic conquests to expand territories and force populations to conform to foreign ideals. These such interactions helped to foster cultural diversity both genetically, as is the case with Attila the Hun, or substantively through the spread of cultural beliefs and practices worldwide.…

I grew up in the deep south were racism was still alive and thriving. My time was in the sixties when the Klux Klux Klan was causing trouble and nothing was being done about it. My parents would tell my sisters and me to always be home before the sun went down because they were afraid that we might be taken or worst killed. When I attended school schools were segregated, but all the students in my class were people of color. White students had their class and we had ours all at the same school.…

Cultural diversity is a concept that is of increasing importance in the delivery of quality health care. It is this cultural awareness that allows healthcare professionals to see the entire picture of the patient and thus improves quality of care and healthcare outcomes The cultural values of specific ethnic groups have a direct influence on how they perceive healthcare, how and when they seek healthcare and how they respond to healthcare providers. There are three aspects of culturally competent care. The first is cultural autonomy which stresses the importance of folkways, customs and beliefs and retains the identity of a culture. The second is acculturation which is an acceptance of customs different from primary society and adapting to the rules of a new culture. The third is cultural imposition which imposes the ways of one culture onto another (Barker, 2009). The Hispanic population has exceeded that of African Americans and is now the largest minority group in the United States according to the 2000 census (Barker, 2009). This creates not only language barriers but differences in cultural beliefs can create further communication barriers if the healthcare professional is not culturally competent. The purpose of this paper is to show the cultural beliefs and values of the Hispanic population and the implications for healthcare providers. Nursing assessment and discharge planning can only be effective if cultural values are incorporated into the care. Through the acknowledgement of these beliefs in our care we can improve the health outcomes of this community.…

I was walking down the street the other day when I stopped and took a hard look at all the different people, businesses, and cultures that surrounded me. My first thought was "wow, we really live in a world that is held together by a wide variety of ethnic groups." Without all the different cultures and influences that I have experienced, I would not be the person I am today. Ethnicity plays an amazing role in whom we are today; from how we are treated and how we are raised, all plays into account when we take a look at different ethnic groups. This paper touches upon that very fact.…

However, I believe these terms describing me, merely list historical facts and statistics. The fact remains; I belong to these various groups by birth, not choice. I believe I am fortunate that my family instilled the understanding of diversity as far back as I can remember. Each of the people who raised me contributed to my value set in different ways. In addition, and most important, my personal experiences helped me to discover and appreciate diversity.…
