Standardized test scores have long been a major criteria to get into the various courses offered by colleges both at undergraduate levels. These mutltiple choice tests do not test the test takers ability to memorize things neither do they function as IQ tests. Clearly these tests have not proven to serve their purpose of indicating the test takers ability to perform well academically at the undergraduate level or graduate level. Moreover a lot of colleges have strict criteria on the score cut offs and emphasize a lot on the standardized test scores which overlooks the other abilities of the student.
Every year about 2 million students take the standardized test SAT to secure admissions to undergraduate programs in various institutions across the country. It measures the students ability to take tests , doesn’t have to do anything with the overall growth of the student over the course. According to Columbia University’s research on standardized testing, these tests cause teachers to just teach based on these tests and this practice can hinder a student’s overall learning potential . Ultimately this can hinder the student’s creativity and imagination.
Some people are naturally good test takers, Some people are academically bright but do not perform well on standardized tests. This criteria is nowadays taken too seriously by the admissions board of many universities which consider these test scores as the sole criteria to get into their academic programs. They often end up neglecting other aspects of the candidates abilities. Which leads to unfair assessment of the candidates abilities and possible denial of admission to deserving candidates.
Tests like SAT, GRE are also of long durations, most of the times ranging from 3 to 4 hours. Leaving the test takers very tired after finishing up. Also not every test taker performs well under these situations. Attention span varies from test taker to test taker. For example jim may have the stamina to sit four straight

    Do you hate staring at a computer/ piece of paper for more than two hours and answering questions? I am sure most people would answer “no”, and that is why standardized testing puts more harm than good in today’s world. Standardized testing causes a lot more problems than usual. It used to be a part of life, but now it’s causing kids not to go to college, and it’s causing kids to have a level of stress that shouldn’t even be allowed. People all over are stating that they give a false overview of who the student actually is, and in the end, these tests won’t get you anywhere in life. It’s important to many people including students who are taking the tests, teachers who are preparing the students for these tests, and of course the parents who have to deal with all the complaints from their child about these tests. This is a pretty important issue today, because so much is riding on these tests. If you do poorly you won’t get accepted to the university you want, or your teacher could get fired because of your performance. Although some people think standardized testing is just a part of life and it teaches students that it’s not okay to fail, these tests give a false interpretation of who the student actually is.     These test only show the students’ performance the day of the test and not the overall growth of the student over the year. The standardized test does a disservice to both the teacher who worked hard to help their students grow and the student who worked extremely hard over the course of the year and improved tremendously, but failed to pass the test.     Before even getting to the components of the test, first lets take into account the fact that a lot of people out there do not have enough money for tutors or books who really need them for preparation. A lot of other people hire tutors or get a lot of books to prepare them well and therefore the preparation itself just went through an unfair process.     Overall, standardized test are unable to correctly measure the growth in a student. According to Greenhaven Press, “Contrary to popular assumptions about standardized testing, the tests do a poor job of measuring student achievement. They fail to measure such important attributes as creativity and critical thinking skills. Studies indicate that standardized tests reward superficial thinking and may discourage more analytical thinking. Additionally, because of the small sample of knowledge that is tested, standardized tests provide a very incomplete picture of student achievement.” The quote from above shows how students are graded based on a rubric and their creativity and critical thinking skills are not accounted for.
