The setting takes place at night in a coffee shop, there is three characters in the painting: the employee, two young men, a young woman, and all the rest of the seats are empty. The focus point in this painting is the young man wearing the blue suit next to a woman, who seems to be her girlfriend. Then on their left, we see another gentleman who appears to be fading away because of the dark shades of blue that Hopper used.
