Painted Terrapin
The Painted Terrapin

Painted Terrapin is a species of turtle found in Borneo, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

The difference between a turtle and a terrapin is that turtles can only live in freshwater while a terrapin can live in both freshwater and brackish water (half-salt and half-fresh).

Turtles live most of their lives under water, they rarely leave the ocean except when the female comes up to shore to lay their eggs. However, terrapins live in ponds, lakes, marshes, swamps and rivers. They swim and also climb onto logs or rocks to bask in the sun. Water lilies, duckweed, arrow plants, moss, logs and rocks are commonly found in a terrapin’s habitat. Their diet is mainly fruits and riverside plants.

During the breeding season, the head of the male turns white and he develops a red stripe between the eyes, which gives him a painted look. The neck of the terrapin is soft but has a bark-like texture. The neck can elongate or shorten to withdraw its head back into its shell. The shell is smooth and hard but it has rock-like features to blend itself with its surroundings. The feet are webbed and have claws that would help them climb onto logs. They swim with its right forehand and left feet in coordination and its left forehand and right feet in coordination.

Painted terrapins were once common throughout the region, but are now rare as a result of overharvesting of their eggs for food, dam building and loss of nesting habitat. They are now critically endangered

Most pet turtles, red eared sliders included, are mainly herbivorous in the wild and can survive on vegetables such as carrots, lettuce or cabbage or fruits such as berries. Some owners also introduce earthworms or live insects such as crickets, beetles or spiders. You can also buy commercial turtle food to ensure that your turtle is getting all of the nutrients it needs. Diet and frequency of feeding is also, in part, a function of your turtle's age. One thing you will notice is that the red eared slider's diet tends to change as they mature. Younger turtles are usually omnivores, eating a wide range of vegetation and insects. As they mature, they tend to be more herbivorous, sticking to fruits and vegetables.…

Loggerhead turtles have many significant adaptations to their current and past environments. Turtles of the family Cheloniidae have various morphological adaptations for aquatic life. Early turtles lost the capacity for aquatic propulsion by body and tail undulations when they developed a shortened, more rigid body form during the Triassic, as an adaptation for armored resistance to attack by predators. However, terrestrial body form with a carapace and walking-type limbs precluded aquatic locomotion and was preadapted for different types of propulsion. In the transition to aquatic life, the shell underwent minimal modifications. These were a lower more streamlined profile and an expansion of the plastrel lobes as an adaptation for swimming rather than walking. The limbs required…

I have three kids and for better or worse we have become a family of reptile owners. I find the plight of any reptile an interesting matter. I found this U.S. Fish and Wildlife act about Gopher tortoises. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service felt the Gopher tortoise needed federal protection. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service control the regulation that would allow the Gopher tortoise to receive protection under the Endangered Species Act. If the Gopher tortoise is added to the endangered species list a lot of farmers and land developers would be limited on improving their property if the Gopher tortoise is a resident on their land. Florida Fish and Wildlife has already listed the Gopher tortoise as a threatened species on the Endangered Species list. The proposed regulation is not harmful, but if the guidelines for relocating the Gopher tortoise to a protected area is not a well thought out process, farmers can be subject to loss of their land to the Gopher tortoise.…

Kemp who made the first report of seeing the turtles. They mainly in the live in the Gulf of Mexico but some baby turtles are found near the Atlantic. Most female Kemp’s Ridley’s lay their eggs on the main nesting beach of Rancho Nuevo in Mexico. Where they dig a hole lay their eggs, cover them with sand and then leave them to hatch and get to the ocean alone. Parenting made easy, huh? The Ridley’s are cold blooded amphibians and have a lifespan up to 50 years but today only 1% of the Kemp’s Ridelys survive to reach sexual maturity. This is caused by three main factors, one is that since 1970 these turtles have been taken out of their habitat and brought to Mexico and South Texas to be sold for various recreational uses. As the population of the Ridley’s decreased so did the turtles availability on the market. The second reason is loss of habitat. Everywhere you look hotels and condos are going up along shorelines taking away the nesting ground of the Ridley’s. There is only one beach, located in Mexico, which is officially protected for the Kemp’s Ridley’s greatly reducing the chances of eggs surviving anywhere other than that beach. And the last and most horrible reason for these turtle’s death and endangerment is drowning in shrimp nets. Of the few turtles that survive being hatched and manage to get by predators, 1/3 of them drown in the shrimping nets they get caught in. Between 500 and 5,000 Kemp’s Ridley’s turtles are…

Most people find it very difficult to differentiate between a frog and a toad. They often mix them up. Their physical features are very much alike. The physical distinctions, however, can easily get blurred because sometimes the features appear mixed or less obvious, and certain species even legitimately fall into both categories. Although frogs and toads seem similar in appearance, they are very different on the basis of origin, habitat, life span, reproduction and to some extent, appearance.…
