Organizations in today’s economy often include cost control or reduction in their overall strategies. Logistics is an area of increasing focus where internal and external costs affect the margins and customer demands require excellence of service. In distribution, selective, exclusive and intensive are three primary channels in which an organization must determine the best option in relation to products and customers. The Kimberly Clark Company provides an excellent example for today’s organizations with “a customer-oriented supply chain reorganization begun more than four years ago, K-C is improving distribution efficiencies, reducing transportation costs and shrinking its carbon footprint, while becoming an indispensable partner to retail customers” (Jamison, 2008, para.3).…

With the globalization of businesses and integration of economies, there has been an increase in the aggregate demand of merchandise. Producers and distributors seek ways to increase sales and market shares. The sales increase can cause problems in production department and warehouse department, such as delays of deliveries. In order to solve this problem, the deliveries of products have to be quick and timely. Third-party logistics have a great advantage in this aspect. According to the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, 3PL is defined as “a firm that provides multiple logistics services for use by customers. Preferably, these services are integrated, or bundled together, by the provider. Among the services 3PLs provide are transportation, warehousing, cross-docking, inventory management, packaging, and freight forwarding.” Enterprises can benefit greatly from established relationships with third-party logistics. At the midsouth plant of Carrington, Inc. management was faced with problems of low productivity, low employee morale, and high unit costs in the section responsible for the assembly of various kinds of packages containing assortments of different products made by the company. These “prepaks,” or “deals,” as they are referred to within the organization, are specially prepared to the specifications of the individual customer. Each package may contain from 24 to 480 items, and the total number of packages for a customer may range from 10 to 1500 units. Most of these packages are prepared in such a way that the retailer can set them up as freestanding, point-of-sale promotional displays. From Carrington’s standpoint, the objective of using these product displays could be placed in aisles or used as shelf extenders. Assembling the deals is essentially a job-shop type process and prior to last year, the “assembly room” was located in a part of the main plant known as Section 10.…

Packaging, as distinct from mere “packing”, plays it‟s most visible and catalytic role in a modern economy with the widespread adoption of branding of products and development of consumer preferences. To the extent that any consumer product is packaged in a manner that meets the criteria of safety, convenience and attractiveness, it gains market share. In the aggregate, packaging as a sectoral activity boosts consumption and economic growth.
