PED In Sports
A performance enhancing drug (PED) is any substance taken to improve a person’s physical performance. PEDs are most often taken or abused by athletes who are trying to improve their abilities. Athletes take Steroids or Human Growth Hormone (HGH), which are types of PEDs that are used to build up muscle strength. They might also take different forms of painkillers to try and increase their threshold for pain. Another type of PED that an athlete might take is a blood booster such as Erythropoietin or EPO. This particular type of PED increases the blood's ability to store or carry oxygen and is most commonly used by endurance athletes such as bikers or long-distance runners. PEDs are not allowed in sports and can be extremely dangerous for …show more content…
There are many forms that steroids come in. Those forms include tablets, liquids, gels, and creams. A person can ingest the drugs orally, inject them into muscle, or rub them on their skin. When taking steroids, athletes will sometimes mix various ones together, possibly injecting one kind while taking another kind orally. This is referred to as stacking. Pyramiding is another way that athletes increase their steroid intake. They will take steroids in patterns where they increase and decrease the dosages during a specific time period to achieve peak performance part of the way through the sequence. All of the mixings of the drugs and the high dosages further increase their risk of negative side …show more content…
With so much possible health issues, athletes should know to avoid using PEDs. But, many athletes still use them to gain an advantage in their sport or to try and recover faster from an injury.
PEDs are used in many different ways in sports. In baseball PEDs are used for hitting home runs (getting stronger). In football they’re used for getting bigger and stronger; players that use PEDs in football could hit harder or kick longer field goals, because of the extra leg strength from the PED. Basketball players may not use PEDs as much as other sports to gain muscle mass or strength, but instead to help their injuries heal faster.
Major League Baseball has taken steps to drive down PED use, with mixed success. The first formal policy, adopted in 2005, set out specific game suspension penalties for players that test positive for PEDs. With each failed test, a player was suspended for a larger quantity of games. The number of games they were suspended ranged from 10 all the way up to a full year’s suspension. In extreme cases, the baseball commissioner would determine the penalty. Due to the increase in the number of positive tests, Major League Baseball has regularly updated the policy, implementing stiffer and stiffer penalties. Players can now be banned from the sport of baseball for life if they fail too many drug tests.

At the most basic, athletes use PEDs to improve their skills at a drastically superhuman rate. Jose Canseco, a former outfielder for the Oakland Athletics, credits his success in the major leagues to his abuse of anabolic steroids. He amplified his weightlifting regimen with PEDs before the 1985 season, gaining 25 pounds of muscle in a matter of months. This lead to his promotion from the A’s minor league affiliate to the Major Leagues. Within three years of his major league debut, Canseco became the first player to enter the exclusive 40-40 club, meaning he stole 40 bases and hit 40 home runs in a single season. (Solberg & Ringer 2011, p. 92) Presently, only four players have achieved that feat. Out of Jose Canseco, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, and Alfonso Soriano, only Soriano’s achievement has not been attributed to use of…

Steroids come in a variety of way to be consumed: injected, swallowed, and snorted. These steroids build muscle to help one perform. Main steroids are HGH (Human Growth Hormone), anabolic steroids. All makes will make one stronger, all can end ones career. “Anabolic- androgenic steroids are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone” (Wadler). That’s just a nice way of saying anabolic-androgenic steroids make one stronger using fake hormones. Anabolic steroids are the most effective and have the worst long term affects. Anabolic steroids are so effective that they are prescribed by doctors to treat “malnutrition, growth disorders, and testosterone deficiency”(Wadler) Although most of these short term affects sound good, the long term seem to throw a juicy curve-ball back at you. Anne Marie Brooks, a writer for a weekly health magazine, states: “Muscles grow so rapidly that tendon or ligament damage results during physical activity. Instead of better performance, the user may face weeks or months on crutches, in a brace, in pain. “Ouch! That sounds like the negatives over rule the positives (of steroids) and anabolic steroids don’t sound so good after all. HGH which is a safer alternative of steroids is also used by a lot of athletes. “Human Growth Hormone is produced by the…

Performance enhancing drugs are not good for you and not fair in professional sports. They are not fair because they are pretty much cheating. In the article, “Athletes and Drugs”, the author states, “Some professional athletes use steroids and other drugs to gain a competitive advantage in their sport.”(Sprague) This shows that they are using substances that gives them the upperhand, like building muscles, in the sport without working hard like everyone else. Also, these performance enhancing drugs may damage your body horribly. According to the author, “Such substances have been known to cause death by heart attack in previously healthy users.”(Sprague) These steroid and other drugs can change many people’s lives by damaging their health…

Drugs can do a lot of bad things for an athletes body. Meyer, Stephen wrote,¨ Epo can increase the number of red blood cells to such a degree that the blood becomes too thick to flow properly, potentially leading to heart attacks and strokes.¨(Meyer). Taking drugs like these can lead to death, a win is not worth more than an athlete's life. Another bad thing steroids can do is lead to Cardiovascular problems. Meyer, Stephen said in his article,¨Some studies have associates steroid use with serious cardiovascular problems, including cardiomyopathies (inflammation of the heart muscle), irregular heart rhythm, development of embolisms( blockage of an artery by a clot or particle that is carried in the bloodstream), and the heart failure.¨(Meyer). This is another health issue that can lead to death which is not worth it. People who take or sell steroids should understand that a life is at risk. People have to understand that what may seem to be a harmless enhancer can actually lead to someone's…

A substance is considered to be performance enhancing if it benefits sports performance by increasing strength, power, speed, or ergogenic or by altering the body weight/composition. Furthermore, in a simple sense, the substances that improves performance by causing changes in behavior and performance in the advantage of the person should be considered performance enhancing. PEDs are illegal to use as it degrades the natural working phenomenon of the human body in athletes. Use of steroids can have serious health repercussions. As steroid give an athlete a superhuman like ability in their performance in respective sports, they tend to use it more than the recommended dose. Secondly, the use of PEDs affects the integrity of sport. Sport is not about simply winning, the cliché “It’s not about whether you win or lose, it’s how you played the game” is absolutely true. Permitting the use of steroids under proper medical supervision would threaten the fairness and integrity of the game. These are the main reason why PEDs are illegal to…

Alex Rodriguez, the highest paid player in the history of baseball, has finally come clean about his use of steroids in the last decade as part of an immunity deal with the Drug Enforcement Association. Although the All-Star third baseman had admitted to steroids use in the past, he had steadfastly denied using banned substances since he joined the New York Yankees in 2004. “All my years in New York have been clean,” he told ESPN in 2009. (Howard). With this in mind, many people enjoy watching sports to see the natural and physical abilities of these athletes. But nowadays you can never be too sure about whether not the players are using steroids or not, which is considered cheating if they are caught and even though steroids help build muscle,…

For years there has been an ongoing argument about whether performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) should be legalised in professional sports. The use of performance-enhancing drugs, commonly known as doping, has been happening behind the scenes. You hear about the athletes in the first Olympic Games (776 B.C.) improving their fights and recovering quickly from fatigue and injuries during their battles by using hallucinogens and stimulants. In my opinion, PEDs should be legalised due…

The primary reason why performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) are outlawed in professional sports is that they give users an unfair advantage over the rest of the field. Various professional sports leagues have attempted to set a level playing field by testing for drug use and suspending those found guilty. It’s a noble effort, but it’s clearly not working. Stiff punishments have done little to reduce the number of cyclists caught cheating every year; as Deadspin helpfully points out, the inheritors of Lance Armstrong’s seven abandoned Tour de France titles have all been implicated in doping scandals. Major League Baseball also hands down suspensions each season to players caught using outlawed substances, and it’s absurd to think those players are the only ones guilty of juicing.…
