Ownership of exotic animals
Have you ever heard the song “If I had a million dollars” by the Bare Naked Ladies? Remember the part where they sing “haven't you ever wanted a monkey?” and thought that owning a monkey would be enjoyable? Sure maybe owning a monkey for a little while would be pretty cool, but what about the long term effects? I used to have a neighbor who owned monkeys so I guess you can say I got the benefits of owning a monkey without the hassle that comes with it, but I know by experience the difficulties of taking care of them and what it can lead to. Exotic animals should not be owned as pets because it can be dangerous for the animals, dangerous for humans, and it is against the law in most of the US. If you can all recall the incident that happened back in October of 2011 in Zanesville Ohio (which happens to be my hometown) where 56 animals were let lose, and all damages that were caused. Zanesville is very close to us which is all the better reason for us all to agree that exotic animals should not be kept as pets. According to the ASPCA in an article titled Exotic animals as pets, “ Experts believe that it took at least five thousand years for wolves to evolve into dogs. So, there are thousands of years of difference between a wild and a domestic animal. Domesticated animals like dogs and cats don't do well without people, and wild and exotic animals don't do well with people.” It takes time to domesticate and animals, so they may seem harmless but they are unpredictable It is dangerous for exotic animals to own them as pets. They require certain environments that we as humans cannot provide them properly. The needs of animlas are hard for us to understand and that can lead to malnutrition and inadecuate exersize. It is very expense not only to buy exotic animals, but to also feed them. PAWS, an organization designed for helping animals says“Exotic animals still possess innate social and physical needs, and require mental stimulation that cannot be provided
