Owl Creek Bridge Foreshadowing
Death to the traitors! Bierce uses foreshadowing to create a shock effect for the reader’s throughout the entire short story of “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. Ambrose furthermore uses symbolism to foreshadow events in his story. He also uses imagery to indicate events that were occurring. Ambrose Bierce uses foreshadowing and other literal techniques to create a shock effect in his short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”.
To begin with Ambrose Bierce uses foreshadowing a lot in this story. For example Farquhar noticed veining on leaves along the river and the bugs. This brings the reader’s to believe that something is not normal because it is not human to be able to do that. “He could no longer feel the roadway beneath his feet!” Farquhar did not realize that his feet were no longer set into the ground because he was hanged. When the noose falls into the river with Farquhar it makes you believe things are not as they appear. The foreshadowing that he uses in this store creates a shocking effect. …show more content…
The ticking of the Farquhar’s watch symbolizes that time is not on Farquhar’s side and he is running out of time as soon as the story starts. The clock was ticking down to the lasts moments till his life. “A piece of dancing driftwood caught his attention and his eyes followed it down the current.” This symbolizes freedom.     The elements of Naturalism at play in this story are present on the description of the scene where the story takes place. The description of Farquhar’s executioners is especially telling. “Two private soldiers of the Federal Army, directed by a sergeant who in civil life may have been a sheriff” demonstrates that war is not far removed from a civil life, as the sergeant is executing a man just as he would if he were a sheriff. Further along in the story Bierce describes Death as “a dignitary who when he comes announced is to be received with formal manifestations of respect, even by those most familiar with him.” By this statement, Bierce gives death a personality that links it with the human obsession with death. Further examples of realism are the descriptions of the environments that Farquhar imagines himself to be in. These depictions of things that are surreal and impossible lends to the desperation of the last vestiges of life to cling to the world. The passages that mention how clearly he can see his surroundings are examples of this.     "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge", is one of the best American short stories and is considered Ambrose Bierce's greatest work. First published in Bierce's short story collection "Tales of Soldiers and Civilians" in 1891, this story is about Peyton Farquhar, a southern farmer who is about to be hanged by the Union Army for trying to set the railroad bridge at Owl Creek on fire. While Farquhar is standing on the bridge with a rope around his neck, Bierce leads the reader to think that the rope snaps and he falls into the river, and then makes an amazing escape and finally returns to his farm, to be reunited with his wife.
