Overview: Looking For Alaska By John Green
Green’s target audience is young adults that like reading stories that they can somewhat relate to. While reading Looking For Alaska, I realized the main purpose of this novel is that Green wants to help his readers find their own “Great Perhaps.” Which you will read about in more detail throughout the book. In LFA, the book is separated into two parts, Before and After. Before: a socially awkward teen named Miles Halter is saying goodbye to his family and “friends” before he goes to Culver Creek Preparatory School for his junior year of high school. Once Miles arrives at the school, he soon meets his roommate Chip Martin, otherwise known as Colonel, and some friends Takumi and, most importantly, Alaska Young. During this section of the book, Miles is on a journey to finding himself and what his purpose in life really is. Through all of his ups and downs, exciting adventures and thought boggling classes such as his favorite Religious Studies. After being hazed by those on campus that call themselves “Weekday Warriors,” the group of friends vow to get revenge. In the midst of all of this, Miles begins to obsess over Alaska, in the most sincere caring way. When celebrating their revenge, (with a little bit of drinking involved on Alaska’s part), Alaska is called by her college boyfriend

Kristen Green started the novel with the intent to discover her town’s past and how her family was involved in the issues of that time. I think that she also wrote “Something Must Be Done About Prince Edward County” to bring attention to the issues of the time; furthermore, I believe that it could also be an attempt at reconciliation for the discrimination and difficulty placed upon people of…

Adventures in the Unknown Interior of America is a tale of epic proportions worthy of The Odyssey. The only difference being that this tale is true. Written by Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Adventures in the Unknown Interior of America details the events of Cabeza de Vaca’s eight-year trip from Spain to the New World. It becomes quite clear though his journey that Cabeza de Vaca changes into a completely different man than he was when he set out from Spain in the name of the king, and God.…

    Suffering In Alaska Young

The name “Alaska” is of Native American origin, meaning “Great Land.” Alaska Young is without a doubt the most complex character in the book. The name Alaska fits her because there is so much about her and to figure out, like a great land. "Little kids can dial 911. They do it all the time. Give me the wine," she said, deadpan and emotionless.” (Green 150). This shows that she is a very complicated person. Alaska is submersed in Guilt, and blame because of her mother’s death. Because of this, Alaska becomes obsessed with the polarity of death and life. She makes constant jokes about dying and fuels her self-destruction with things such as drinking and smoking. She is what you call a hot mess. “She said, "It's not life or death, the labyrinth."…

The main character of the novel, Olivia, has not had a steady home environment as she has been shifted to many different foster homes. Although, she is a brilliant student when she is there. Olivia gets arrested for forging some stolen checks and then gets sent to jail. Detention center was her next stop because her foster mom said she was too much work. Ultimately, Olivia serves her time and goes to college, where she is very successful. Olivia’s story is an example of how Corwin structures his book. He uses anecdotes to give readers insight into the students lives. In addition, he organizes the novel into different times of the year so the readers can follow the students in chronological order. Corwin is effective using this strategy because it makes the readers feel apart of the story. The sequencing the novel by seasons and semesters gives readers the feeling that they are apart of the high school. Another strategy Corwin uses is portraying multiple Americas. He does this by showing us the struggle filled lives of most students and the fortunate lives of the others. For example, Toya has to overcome being a teen mother while still getting an education whereas Curt is raised by a single mother, but in Los Angeles’ wealthiest black community. Corwin…

While searching the internet for a satisfactory place to take a vacation, I stumbled upon the Glacier Bay national park in Alaska. The park looked quite interesting to me, so I decided I would visit there for a few days the next week. Trips to Alaska are not cheap, let me tell you; $500 each way! When I landed at the airport, the first thing I wanted to do was find a way to get to the park. Luckily, one of my friends lives in Alaska, and she was able to drive me to Gustavas, about 10 miles away from Bartlett Cove. After she dropped me off, I started walking to Bartlett Cove so that I could get to the Glacier Bay Lodge and relax for a while. I got a room there and got some food, I hadn’t had anything to eat except some chips on the 5 hour 45 minute ride from Anchorage, and…
