OVERCOMING FOREIGN LANGUAGE ANXIETY

“Sweaty palms, shaking hands, dry mouth and muscle tension mean for many of us, that we are about to speak in public. Couple this fear of speaking in public with performing or speaking in another language and the success of the speaker may be dramatically compromised” (Leigh, 2009). By having to speak in a foreign language, the amount of fear in us grows and transforms into the feeling of anxiety, which is scientifically named as a Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA). The fear of dealing in a foreign language environment is most felt when a student must perform orally in some way but it can also occur when listening, reading or writing (Brantmeier, 2005). FLA has been the subject of many scholarly surveys and papers as overcoming it can lead to better and faster language acquisition as well as a much more pleasurable learning experience (Guess, 2007). Between one third and one half of second language learners suffer from FLA (Von Worde, 2003; Randall 2007) and it is important to be aware that many of these students have not come up with a way to deal with their anxiety (Hauck & Hurd, 1991).This research paper aims to outline the causes and effects of FLA as well as the ways that help overcoming it. Despite the fact that Foreign Language Anxiety has been proven to be the main concern to the modern teaching environment, a progress has been noticed at the development of the overcoming strategies. The overcoming foreign language anxiety process includes strategies that can be implemented by the teacher, a tutor and the students.
The causes of this kind of anxiety vary from the student itself. According to the article “Factors Associated with Foreign Language Anxiety”, there are variables like age, previous academic success or previous high school experience with foreign languages which may contribute to the fear of learning a foreign

    State anxiety refers to the moment-to-moment experience of anxiety that varies in strength and fluctuates over time (MacIntyre, 1999). It is consciously perceived feelings at a particular moment in time (Speilberger, 1983). MacIntyre (1999) suggests the usefulness of discussing trait and situation specific anxieties, which can be used to inspect the character of a person who will most likely experience state anxiety.     As children learn a second language, Walqui brings out, there are individual, social and societal factors that the teacher should consider (2002). Some of these are linked to the native language of the student. Things that a teacher must take into account include the student’s proficiency in their native tongue. Additionally, how much academic knowledge the student has in their native tongue and the amount of prior knowledge the student has of the English language. “The more academically sophisticated the student is in their native language, knowledge, and abilities” can make a difference in how quickly and efficiently the student can learn in a second language (Walqui, 2002).     I do feel somewhat anxious, as one does when trying out new things. At the same time, I must admit I am a little scared of not being able to learn as fast as the rest of the class. I understand this is a possibility and I believe many of my classmates might share the same fear. I hope the teacher will be kind and patient, and create a non-threatening environment in which most of our learning styles and speeds are considered. I hope the teacher will be non-judgmental, since I believe that if one feels judged when starting something new one would be more likely to feel self-conscious, which will in turn make one nervous and worried about one’s performance instead of focusing on learning the language. I think that in this type of context the students should forget about previous learning experiences –specially those in which he or she was punished for his or her mistakes– and try to move closer to understanding and producing the language without feeling threatened.     To define, social anxiety is the “fear experienced in interactional contexts”, and worry is “an anxious apprehension about possible future, negative events” (Kimura, 2017, p 145). To separate general worry from second language listener worry, Kimura added a component to the study called a general disposition to worry. This component was necessary for the validity of the study, since everyone exhibits some capacity of worry. After analyzing the different aspects that may hinder the research, the study began. “The survey participants were 1,177 Japanese university students of English who were taking required English classes at the time of study (Kimura, 2017, p.146). At a mean age of nineteen years old, the students participating in the study attended multiple schools and studied in a variety of academic areas. Divided into two groups, students were placed into high or low listening proficiency groups. This became the independent variable of the study. To measure their listening anxiety students were administered three questionnaires that focused on each area of study by professors of the university. The areas of study, or dependent variables, included self-focused apprehension, task focused apprehension, social anxiety, and general disposition to worry.     As an international language, at the present day, English has been used and learnt by the people all over the world, include by Indonesian students. Based on the history, English is main language which is used in Britain, USA, and many others foreign countries, where it differs in grammatical, vocabularies, and pronunciation. Besides that, there are many words in English which is derived from French which is coming through the colonial peoples and widely used in environmental governance itself.
