Recently, there have been many debates over the important issue on how companies and governments in the past decades have been increasingly sourcing a wide range of tasks to offshore sites. A group member of ours is an overseas buyer for his company. He is fortunate enough to experience what that is like firsthand. As a buyer, he is required to travel to different countries where large labor and talent pools are available at lower costs to try to procure goods and services at the lowest price, in order to help his company reach higher profits. Many Americans believe that outsourcing is one of the main reasons that the unemployment rate has been increasing in the United States, so they complain and publicly criticize the companies and governments who outsource jobs abroad. Also many U.S. workers (from white- collar well educated individuals to semi-skilled workers) have become more concerned about the security of their jobs due to increasing global economic integration since the early 2000s.…

Outsourcing of R&D functions of company is not a new concept. Its history can be traced way back to 1970’s and 1980’s when companies in United States were contracted by the government to carry out R&D activities on behalf of them. During the early 1990’s, concept of outsourcing R&D expanded rapidly. Today many global players in the market outsource at least a small portion of their R&D activities to other countries like India, China and Brazil. Companies like Microsoft, GE, Boeing, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo to name a few have set up their R&D centers in offshore destinations.…

Sourcing information products is a complex exercise involving many variables. In today’s uncertain business climate, information budgets are sensitive to scrutiny and constantly under threat. In many cases, information professionals are faced with trying to get more value from suppliers with a flat or reduced budget or contending with a “now we have it, now we don’t” scenario. What’s more, there is a lot of rival content available from the Internet, making it more difficult to justify expenditure on pricey products. As a category, information products pose a number of challenges to the information professional tasked with sourcing them. Information products constitute a complex category because they are difficult to compare on a feature-by-feature basis. Although there may be considerable overlap among the content offered and the products purchased, each one has certain unique features and a core group of users who consider these different products indispensable to their work. User needs can differ too, adding to the difficulty of comparing one product with another. In some segments of the market (real-time stock market data, for example) there is a virtual monopoly, which limits the relative power…

In summary the following case was about Microsoft’s quest to enter the video game market with its Xbox gaming console. Microsoft’s history of having a small hardware business forced Microsoft to make a crucial decision about whether it should manufacture this gaming console along with managing a global supply chain or outsource the manufacturing to a third party. They quickly decided that it would be in their best interest to outsource the manufacturing of this product since they lacked the manufacturing and logistics capabilities needed. (Case study, 2011) After review of several potential suppliers, it decided to outsource assembly and significant logistics functions to Flextronics, a Singapore-based contract manufacturer. Flextronics was a global corporation with a large amount of employee’s and was already working with other major companies such as Xerox and Dell.…

There are always risks you may considered when outsourcing. For example, Microsoft took the risk to give away key technological know-how to Flextronics on the Xbox. Another risks one take when entering a strategic alliance is the commitments to alliance partners. Microsoft and Flextronics already have a business relationship because Microsoft contracted Flextronics to manufacture computer mice. Microsoft would not have been better off manufacturing the Xbox themselves. They lacked logistics and manufacturing capabilities to mass-produce the Xbox. It was cheaper to outsource it to a company already established in the manufacturing market such as Flextronics; a company recognized by Microsoft because their previous alliances.…
