Your actions in life are what separate us into individuals. This means how you are viewed by others is greatly changed by your actions and whether or not you take ownership of them. “The presentation should make clear that the responsibility for development of these competencies does not reside with faculty or administrators, but with each student. This emphasis should foster the developmental growth of personal responsibility towards self-directedness.” (Neil 2012) Although Neil was directing this towards law students, it can be carried over to all students as well. By becoming more responsible you grow as a person and will make better choices in life. For instance, in the past I have always made the wrong decisions and instead of taking ownership I blame it on others. Personal responsibility is crucial for success in college because so much depends on your actions. Whether it’s time management, completing homework, or just attending class, you have to be responsible and put yourself in a position to succeed. For example, I tend to not manage my time responsibly and it hurts me in my schoolwork. I am very busy so it’s not so much that I waste time, but more that I don’t make enough time for school. “By comparing the participants ' time spent studying with their grades and time management skills, he discovered that each additional hour spent studying per week resulted in only a 0.025 increase in GPA.” (Gorrell 2001) Gorrell discovered that it takes much more studying to make a significant change in GPA. To me, any increase is worthy of making more effort to study. So to help, it may be best to come up with a preliminary plan on how to effective manage my time. In my case, I will plan to set aside time on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to work on homework for class. Also I have more free time on the weekends so anything that needs to be wrapped up can be finished then. Having a plan and being responsible in sticking to it can help me to be much more successful in the
