I. Introduction
A. Punishment is supposed to be a temporary penalization for a wrongful action. Death is far from temporary.
B. The death penalty does not punish people for killing, but for murder. Killing is justified when it is done in self-defense. Killing means to cause death. Murder, on the other hand, is defined as, “the unlawful and malicious killing of one human being by another.”
C. The death penalty doesn’t deter crime, cost tax payers more than imprisoning the criminal, and could result in executing an innocent person by mistake. The death penalty does not keep us safer. Homicide rates for states that use the death penalty are consistently higher than for those that don’t.
