Plan
Eyewitness testimony is the evidence given in court or in police investigations by someone who has witnessed a crime or an accident.
A leading question is a question phrased in such a way as to prompt a particular kind of answer.
Talk about Loftus and Palmer;
Aim; to find out if changing the wording of a question could distort someone’s ability to recall memory of an event.
Method; Showed participants a series of car crash videos before asking them to fill out a questionnaire. One question was how fast the cars were going. They used an independent measures design to divide the participants into 5 conditions: 'Smashed', 'Collided', 'Bumped', 'Hit', 'Contacted'.
Results; found that by changing the wording of a question, it significantly influenced the speeds given by the participants.

Loftus and palmer were interested in seeing how misleading questions affected eyewitness testimony, they conducted a lab experiment in which 45 students were shown films of traffic accidents, they were then asked a question about how fast the car was going, students were either given the verb hit, smashed, contacted, collided or bumped. The group with smashed estimated the highest speed whereas the group given the word contacted estimated the lowest speed, this suggests that leading questions have a significant effect on memory. Loftus et al conducted another lab experiment to assess the effect of misleading info on EWT.

    The findings of this experiment suggest different results from the original experiment carried out by Loftus and Palmer in 1974, as there was no significant difference between the estimated speeds between the two groups because the results were not statically different. The descriptive results showed that the participants in the smashed group estimated a higher speed than the participants of the contacted group, (smashed group estimated a speed of 61.375 whereas the contacted group estimated a speed of 49.5), however the Mann-Whitney U test values indicated that the difference wasn’t significant enough to differentiate between the two conditions and so the difference was due to chance. The results reject the experimental hypothesis and support the null hypothesis that states that the use of the word “smashed” in the critical question will have no effect on the speed estimated. As my results are different to the original experiment carried out by Loftus and Palmer I suspect that there were some limitations in my attempt to replicate the experiment.…

    It occurs when a person’s recall of episodic memories becomes less accurate because of post-event information. Research in this area began by Elizabeth Loftus in 1974. It was about the “ False Memories”. When the first collection of misinformation experiments appeared in the mid-1970s, the lesson that was being learned from these experiments was that misleading postevent information can impair memory of an original event ( Loftus, 1975 , 1977 , 1979 ). Memory Impairment Hypothesis- a genuine change or alteration in memory of an experienced event as a function of some later event. McClosky and Zaragoza ( 1985 a, 1985 b) disputed the memory impairment hypothesis. McCloskey and Zaragoza (1985), claimed that memory for an original event is not impaired by misleading postevent information. McCloskey and Zaragoza devised a test that excluded the misinformation as a possible response alternative, and they found no misinformation effect. McCloskey and Zaragoza argued that it was not necessary to assume any memory impairment at all–neither impairment of traces nor impairment of access.
