Outliers: Is It Important To Be Successful?
Many people struggle with finding jobs they actually enjoy. Only thirteen percent of people enjoy going to work and twenty-four percent are not happy with the job they currently have. It’s obvious that loving your job affects your success business wise but it also affects you physically and mentally. Not only does having an enjoyable job make work easier but by loving your job, you will get more confidence, persistence, and motivation to do better in your field of work. It improves your physical and mental state by having a less stressful job. When having a job that you like, you have no problem waking up and going to work, but with a bad job everything seems like a never-ending chore. Motivation plays a big role in success. With a crumby job you don’t want to do anything. You want to sit around and count the hours until you can go home, but a good job doesn’t feel like work. It gives you just as much pleasure as it does to be home. If you are motivated you get things done quicker and better. Even the smallest accomplishments feel huge because having a job you love gives you extra motivation. In the book Outliers By Malcolm Gladwell he talks about something called the ten thousand hour rule. Gladwell says it takes around ten thousand hours to achieve true mastery in any field of work. “What’s ten years? Roughly how long it takes to put in ten thousand hours of hard practice.” If that’s the case it would be very difficult and tiring to try and reach mastery if you hate your job. The lack of motivation would be detrimental to ones success. No motivation leads to a person falling behind in their craft and when someone falls behind the others skill wise it can cause their confidence to drop lower than it already was. “Achievement is talent plus preparation. The problem with this view is that the closer psychologists look at the careeres of the gifted, the smaller the role innate talent seems to play and the bigger the role preparation seems to play.” Says Gladwell.     Outliers: The Story of Success is a book that examines the qualities and experiences of successful people in order to provide a blueprint for nurturing the human potential. According to the author, Malcolm Gladwell, human potential is not something one is born with but something that has to be shaped throughout one’s life course. Contrary to popular belief, having a high IQ or a lucky break are good opportunities to have, however, they do not contribute to an individual’s success alone. Gladwell realized that it took a combination of biological, personal, social, and environmental factors to help an individual reach their full potential. Examples of those factors that influence one’s success include timing of birth, area where one lives, family history, and culture. These factors make up concepts that Gladwell described as practical intelligence, social savvy, natural growth, and natural advantage. In addition to these factors, he discussed how anyone can succeed if they were willing to practice and work hard. He demonstrated this theory by researching the different stories of successful people and he found a common denominator, long hours of professional practice.
