Throughout his life he has been honored and awarded, he has also wrote quite a few poems, and has had more than his share of pain and suffering. Robert Frost was born in San Francisco, California on March 26, 1874. Two years after his father would be diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis and would later die in 1885, his mother would also die at a young age in 1901. He also worked as a school teacher first starting at Methuen and later teaching at Pinkerton Academy. Also in the 1890’s he would work as an editor for the “San Francisco Evening Bulletin” in California and would also work in a factory and delivering papers after he dropped out of college. Frost wrote the poem “Out, Out” because he believed that a poem “begins in delight and ends in wisdom.” The poem needed to be about something that mattered and needed to “move the reader to a new understanding.” “Out, Out” is about a young boy who ends up cutting off his hand and dies because of it. He wrote this poem to entertain and then to teach his readers that even though there is pain and suffering life has to and will go on. Throughout his life he gained many honors and awards. He won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1924, 1931, 1937, and in 1943. He was also named “Poet laureate of Vermont on July 22, 1961 and in the year before congress voted him for a gold medal. Also in 1961 (January) his career reached a climax when he recited his poem “The Gift Outright” at the inauguration of President John F.

“Out,Out-“ and Bredon Hill are two very different poems which both deal with the theme of unexpected death. “Out,Out-“, by Robert Frost, is the story of the death of a boy caused by a buzz-saw. The title, “Out,Out-“, was taken by Frost from Shakespeare’s Macbeth – these words were used to express Macbeth’s grief at the death of his wife, Lady Macbeth, saying “out, out brief candle”, which enforces the idea that a life has prematurely ended, which echoes the theme and narrative of the poem. However, in Bredon Hill the title does not have any particular significance to the theme of unexpected death; rather it is the name of a place where the persona and his girlfriend liked to spend their time together.…

He tone the poet uses in ‘Disabled’ is quite bitter and regretful; he shows this by using the past to show a certain sadness and pain he is going through. The quotation ‘About this time Town used to swing so gay’ suggests that it doesn’t anymore. Whereas in ‘Out, out-‘the tone used is quite calming and eerie at the beginning. For example, the line ‘Under the sunset far into Vermont’ lulling the reader into a false sense of security. This suddenly changes to a tone of panic in the line ‘Don’t let him, sister!’ Therefore the suffering here is shown to be unexpected. Frost shows that suffering is something to be afraid of in ’Out, out-‘as the boy cries ‘don’t let him cut my hand off’. The panic shown by the boy owing to the thought of losing a limb indicates that he is afraid of losing his hand, due to the suffering the loss of a limb will bring to him in the future. This is shown in ‘Disabled’ as Owen shows the effect that a loss of limb can have on both physical and mental suffering. Owen’s view of suffering can contrast with Frosts portrayal of it. In disabled it would seem that although suffering is something to be feared, the narrator has learned to live alongside it- despite how hard it is. In the line ‘ Now, he will spend a few sick years in Institutes’ Owen suggests that his disability, and the effects it…

Robert Frost, one of the most known poets in history, so much so that John F. Kennedy once said about him, “He has bequeathed his nation a body of imperishable verse from which Americans will forever gain joy and understanding.” Robert Frost was born in San Francisco on March 12, 1874, California until at the age of eleven he moved to New England. This transition from the West to East coast must have triggered something in the young Frost as he started to become interested in reading and writing poetry, something he continued to do throughout high school. Frost was enrolled in Dartmouth and later Harvard, although he never earned a degree from either school. Frost drifted in and out of jobs for the next few years while always writing and submitting his poetry until his first poem “My Butterfly” was published on November 8th, 1894 by New York newspaper, the Independent. A little less than a year later he married his wife, Elinor Miriam White, who was a major influence on his poetry until her unfortunate passing in 1938. Years after marrying Frost and White moved to England where Frost’s poetry career fully came to light. He became very influenced by poets such as Rupert Brooke, Robert Graves and Edward Thomas, he also met another poet of the time, Ezra Pound. Frost and Pound developed a close relationship with Pound helping to promote and publish Frost’s poems. By the time Frost and…

Both ‘Out, Out’ and ‘Disabled’ describe specific injuries to young men. ‘Out, Out’ is set in 1910 and was written by Robert Frost, who wrote the poem after reading a news article about an accident. ‘Disabled’ was set in 1917 and written by Wilfred Owen; he wrote the poem because he had fought in the war and wanted to document his thoughts about it. Both poems were written around the same time, however the two poems were written about accidents that occurred in different places. ‘Disabled’ was written about an injury that happened during World War 1 and ‘Out, Out’ was about an injury that happened just before the war on a farm. ‘Disabled’ talks about a man who was hurt in the war and had to have some of his limbs amputated whilst ‘Out, Out’ is about a child who suffers injuries after losing control of a power saw and dies from blood loss.…

“Out, out, brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more”. Undeniably this bittersweet reference from Shakespeare’s Macbeth that illustrates the image of a wavering candle light that is fragile and brief also brings to mind the spirit of life, which at the same time is also brief in addition to easily snatched away. “Out, out" is a poem by Robert Frost whom tells the tale of a young boy that has lost his life under and unfortunate circumstance. In comparison, “Disabled” by Wilfred Owen depicts a man that has left part of his existence in war. Both poems assert ideas that insinuate brevity along with fragility of both characters in the poem, in addition to the essence that life will go on, that a singular life such as those of the characters are insignificant on a universal scale as when the young soldier from “Disabled” returned from war he is shunned and forgotten and the boy from “Out, out” where the people around him moved on even when he had just died.…

    3. Frost’s reference to Macbeth’ contributes to my understanding of “Out, Out-“that this poem’s theme is about death. From the reference to Shakespeare play, Macbeth, I can expect read about someone dying, an unexpected death. In my opinion, the theme of this poem is the cruel, emotionless, merciless relationships adults had with their children back then in America. Children weren’t given the opportunity to enjoy their childhood. They had many responsibilities and tasks to fulfill.…

An unknown author once wrote "Never take life too seriously; after all, no one gets out of it alive". When reading this quote, there can almost be an immediate connection between two very good works of writing: Macbeth's "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" speech from Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth, and the poem "Out, Out --" by Robert Frost. Both allude to the idea that a single life, in its totality, denotes nothing, and eventually, everyone's candle of life is blown out. However, each poet approaches this idea from opposite perspectives. Frost writes of a young, innocent boy whose life ends suddenly and unexpectedly. His poem is dry and lacks emotion from anyone except the young boy. Whereas the demise of Shakespeare's character, Macbeth, an evil man, has been anticipated throughout the entire play. Through these writings, we are able gather a little more insight as to how these poets perhaps felt about dying and life itself.…

In the play Macbeth, there are many scenes and lines that leave an impression on the reader. Whether these quotes are powerful, saddening, or hilarious, an individual can feel quite inspired by the play. Robert Frost, a poet, is one of these individuals. He wrote a poem called “Out, Out-“, based on Act V Scene V of Macbeth. His poem is clearly inspired by the play, as it deals with similar aspects, such as death. And while Shakespeare used the language of his time in the play, Frost uses a lot of figurative language in his poem. Frost was clearly inspired by Shakespeare to write this poem, as the title is a quote from the novel and the topics are so similar.…
