Guernica Music, the visual arts, and dance can be used to develop critical thinking, which includes the ability to use logic and reasoning in problem solving. Critical thinking is an active, purposeful, organized, and cognitive process that research has shown can be explicitly taught. The skills required for critical thinking support higher learning, which necessitates the ability to see connections between concepts and topics, and to generalize understanding between disciplines. There are various methodologies available to teach critical thinking. When you look at art what do you see? Do you only see a beautiful piece of work? Or do you see some form of meaning behind the master piece? There is usually always a message behind the artist’s master piece. Instead of using words, he or she is using their painting. There also maybe some text in the painting to give you some idea as to what the message the artist is trying to get across. When looking at a piece of art many different meanings come to mind. You can draw any conclusion that you want. Everyone will come up with their own interpretation of what the artist is actually trying to say. Since the artist isn’t around to tell you what he really means, it’s hard to figure out who is right or wrong. Let’s take a look at the master-piece called Guernica by Pablo Picasso. Picasso painted this piece during the Spanish Civil War in 1937. The Spanish Republican government commissioned Picasso to create a large mural for the Spanish display at an exposition. They wanted a mural done to show tragedies of the war. Even though the government wanted to the mural to show the tragedies, it also shows now a constant reminder of what can happen again. Today it can show World Peace. This piece of art to me has so many different meanings. I think the war had hit home for Pablo Picasso. So for this piece the Spanish Civil War was a huge influence on this painting. The painting is black, gray and white. So to me that
