Osteomalacia

Osteomalacia is a disease of the bones, caused by a Vitamin D deficiency. Because patients with this disease have bones that are soft, they are more likely to bow and fracture than stronger, healthier bones. This disease can occur in children, in which case it is called Rickets. Because Osteomalacia is caused by the lack of Vitamin D, easily accessible in our diets, it can be turned around and cured. Osteomalacia affects people of all ages, and in all stages of life. The people most at risk of Osteomalacia are those who aren’t able to produce enough Vitamin D through exposure to sunlight, this includes people who are ill, and the elderly. People whose diet is lacking in Vitamin D and/or calcium may be at risk, especially if they’re unable to produce enough Vitamin D in the skin. People who are vegan, on a lacto-vegetarian diet, or lactose intolerant are more likely to aquire Osteomalacia than people with the normal nutrient-rich diet. Everyone is at risk of obtaining Osteomalacia if they don't take in the proper nutrients.

Osteomalacia affects those who have the disease differently based on the stage of it or how serious it is. For example, it would affect someone that just aquired Osteomalacia less than someone that was in a more serious stage of it. Emotionally, Osteomalacia causes fear. Because of their weak bones, many patients are afraid of falling. This fear might cause them to not take risks or live life to the fullest in fear of getting hurt. The patient would not take chances or put themselves in situations that could cause them to fall. Physically, patients with Osteomalacia experience pain and weakness in their bones. It is hard for patients to do everyday activities such as walking, never mind running. Because of the pain, simple activities are harder to get through due to the increase in effort to look past the pain in order to get through activities. Mentally, many patients with osteomalacia

    Osteoporosis has been associated with breakage in the hip, wrist, pelvis and other parts of the bones. Osteoporosis is more common in women than men and everyone has bone loss as they get older; however, consuming enough or adequate amounts of calcium early on in age can delay the effects of the bone loss. When there is not enough calcium absorbed in the body, the body begins to take away from the stored calcium in the bones in order to help maintain normal functions in the body, thus, causing the breakage in areas of the body. Supplements that contain calcium and vitamin D can help with the health problem and help or prevent many people from serious breakages when they fall. The FDA released a claim in 2003 stating that, "Adequate calcium throughout life, as part of a well-balanced diet, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis" and "Adequate calcium and vitamin D as part of a healthful diet, along with physical activity, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later life" (Office of Dietary Supplements, National Institutes of Health, n.d.). In order for a person to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, they must first consume the recommended daily dosage of calcium which starts out at 200 mg for a baby until they are six months old, than from six months to 12 months it becomes 260 mg. Once they become a year old it is recommended to consume 700 mg until the age of three, than from the age of four-eight it jumps up to 1,000 mg. Once they hit the age of nine it is recommended to consume 1,300 mg until a person reaches the age of 19, than it goes back down to 1,000 mg and that is adequate until the age of 51 for males and 70 for females. It has become a very stated fact that calcium plays an important role in the health and well-being of our bones.
