Title : Osmosis in Quail’s Eggs

Research Question
What is the effect of different concentrations of sodium Chloride (NaCl) on the mass of the de-shelled quail’s eggs?
Introduction
Osmosis is an example of passive transport. Osmosis is defined as the movement of water molecules, down its concentration gradient, from an area of high water concentration (low solute concentration) to an area of lower water concentration (high solute concentration) through a selectively permeable membrane. Osmosis doesn’t need energy in form of ATP since it is passive transport and move down the concentration gradient. Cells respond to their external environment by shrinking, swelling, or staying the same based on the movement of water molecule.
The eggshell is made of calcium carbonate. When calcium carbonate is in contact with hydrochloric acid, a chemical reaction will takes place and carbon dioxide is released. This results in production of gas bubbles on the surface of the egg.
Hypothesis
The higher the concentration of sodium chloride (NaCl), the lower the mass change of the quail’s egg after being immersed in the sodium chloride solution for 24 hours. In low concentration of sodium chloride solution, the solution will be hypotonic to the egg because the concentration of solute in sodium chloride is lower than the concentration of solute in water. Water molecules move from hypotonic to hypertonic solution. Thus, water diffuses in the egg membrane by osmosis and the mass of egg increases. In high concentration of sodium chloride solution, the solution will be hypertonic to the egg because the concentration of solute in sodium chloride is higher than the concentration of solute in water. Water molecules move from hypotonic to hypertonic solution. Thus, water diffuses out from the egg membrane by osmosis and the mass of egg decrease.

    When the experiment was finalized the vinegar solution enlarged the eggs mass. Before the vinegar solution it was 55.1 grams and after the solution it was 67.9 grams. The volume of the egg was also increased. At the beginning it was 50 mL after the solution it was 60 mL; it had a 10 mL difference. It is visible that a hypotonic solution was present. This rejects the hypothesis made. When the egg was placed in 150 mL of vinegar and left intact overnight the egg did sink to the bottom and remain that way, however, the mass was increased instead of keeping it the same, by approximately 13 grams. Furthermore, the volume was also increased it did not remain the same. By analyzing the data it can be determined that the water had a larger concentration and did not have to balance out with the vinegar. The vinegar acted in a peculiar way although it eroded the shell and took some weight off the water flowed inside the egg due to the low concentration of the vinegar.…

    What is osmosis? Osmosis is a very important part of biology. It is the spontaneous passage of water or other solvents through a semipermeable membrane. A semipermeable membrane is one that blocks the passage of dissolved substances. Osmosis occurs when there is an imbalance of solutes outside of a cell versus inside the cell. A solution that has a higher concentration of solutes than another solution is said to be hypertonic, and water molecules tend to diffuse into a hypertonic solution. Cells in a hypertonic solution will shrivel as water leaves the cell via osmosis. If a solution has a lower concentration of solutes than another solution it is said to be hypotonic, and water molecules tend to diffuse out of a hypotonic solution. Cells in a hypotonic solution will take on too much water and swell. The purpose of this experiment is to observe the process of osmosis and getting a better understanding on how osmosis works. To study osmosis I will be using two non-boiled eggs. Eggs are used because under the hard outer shell is a semipermeable membrane that allows air and moisture to pass through. Because water molecules can move into and out of the egg but large molecules cannot, the semipermeable egg membrane allows for an exploration of the concepts of diffusion and osmosis. I will be removing the outer shells of the eggs and then testing one of the eggs with water and the other egg with corn syrup to determine which solution is hypertonic and which solution is hypotonic. My hypothesis is, is that the egg in the corn syrup solution will be hypertonic where the molecules will move out of the egg causing it to shrivel and the egg in the water solution will be hypotonic causing the egg to swell.…
