Orientation: Training for New Employees It is very important for every workplace to have an orientation program in order to train all new employees. The first few days at a new job will create a lasting impression upon an employee. Will the new employee perform his or her job safely, efficiently, and correctly? Part of the answer depends on this orientation; the way the trainers teach the new employees during their orientation will form the foundation for his or her work habits. The training provides all employees with information that is vital to the organization. During the orientation, the trainer should cover all safety topics, walk them through the daily operations, and explain all the policies and procedures associated with the position.
The first and most important reason new employees need training is safety. If the environment is someplace where employees can get hurt, trainers and supervisors have to make sure employees know the proper safety procedures. Trainers should walk through the operation with employees and orient the employee to the production areas, highlighting locations of key safety elements such as fire exits, eye wash stations, fire extinguishers, bathrooms, and anything else the employee may need in an emergency. Trainers must cover what employees need to do in the event of a fire or other emergency, as well as explaining emergency action and escape plans to the employees. Emergency drills are valuable aids in familiarizing your employees with the actions they must take, the routes they must follow, and the location of any special safety equipment; trainers should explain these drills to the new employees during the orientation program and have them practice the drills. Workers who know what to do in an emergency situation are less likely to panic and more likely to assist their coworkers in an emergency.
During the orientation, the trainer should take the opportunity to stress “how we
