1: What happened to the A-Team?
The A-Team was forced to disband because from the very first tasking, there was conflict between the group members. The group never actually came together to complete their first tasking of defining roles. The arguments between the group members got so bad that one of their team members walked out for the group and threatened to quit the program. Why did the group process break down?
The group process broke down because there was never a group. This group began with a group of five individuals who had strong opinionated views as of the relevancy of their professions and experience. Instead of getting together as a group and mutually deciding how the tasking’s should be assigned to the group members. Instead of finding ways to relate their experience to a tasking that would promote group success, each member found ways to put down or argue the experience of the other members. There was poor structural integration, differences in social identity, and stereotyping. What dimensions of diversity were responsible for the conflict?
The dimensions of diversity that were responsible for the conflict included gender, ethnicity, experience, and age.

2: Describe which barriers to effectively managing diversity were present in this situation?
Discrimination: Rebecca seems to feel that the “girls” are being treated unfairly by Aran because they are women. They feel that Aran didn’t give them a “real” job.
Stereotyping: The women feel that Aran is extremely sexist because he didn’t give them “real” jobs. While not specifically mentioned they might assume he is sexist as well due to his Arab descent.
Social Identity: Being of Arab descent in a group of predominately American Aran felt that his social identity put him at a disadvantage. This probably forced Aran to find a way to put him in a position of power over the others in an attempt to avoid being the outcast.

    The first scene that I am going to be studying the issues of representation in is the middle chapter (Chapter 6) from the film entitled: “Too Much Madness.” In this scene, Moses and the rest of his and Sam are in Tina’s flat. In this scene when the “monsters” attack, the males take charge, however when one of the gang dies, and Moses is stuck, the females take charge and kill both of the aliens. This shows that while the males think they are dominant and can protect everyone else, they are in fact equal to the females. I think this is Joe Cornish trying to address a traditional view of males being the dominant gender, and this scene clearly shows that woman are just as strong, maybe even stronger than the males. Ethnicity is a not a key feature of this scene, however class is. Sam is the only middle class person in the room, and she is the only one that isn’t sat on the sofas with everyone else. This portrays her as an outcast because of her social class. Similarly age alienates Sam, she is in her early twenties, and however everyone else in the room is in their mid-teens. This age gap means that the rest of the people in the room don’t respect her, because she is a non- authoritative figure. Her age is made fun of by one of the girls, who says: “Moses, when did you start dating your maths teacher?” This portrays yet another stereotypical view: younger generations do not respect their elders. This is further supported when Sam tries to take charge and speaks up, but she is put down again when the girls just laugh at her. The camera angle is very low when Sam stands up and speaks, so this gives Sam a feeling of insecurity and nervousness, like she is not looked highly upon. However when the leader of the…

    Relying on this skewed idea of gender roles, the society in the novel judges men and women differently. While men who fly away from their communities and families are venerated as heroes, women who do the same are judged to be irresponsible.     Women during this time are looked down upon and unappreciated. Females are seen as objects that should cook, clean, and have babies for their husbands. The majority of relationships between husbands and wives are this way, but there are exceptions. Harpo and Sofia seem to swap roles in their relationship, reluctantly for Harpo. Sofia repairs the house and does “man” work. She is a strong, independent woman and Harpo has a hard time with this. Harpo only has his father as a role model of how to treat women and his father does not set a moral standard. Harpo attempts to follow his father’s example and hit Sofia, but she does not put up with it and Harpo comes out with a black eye. Harpo continues his attempt at being dominant over Sofia by binge eating in order to get bigger than she is. Harpo is not able to grasp the idea that women are capable of “manly” tasks because that is not how he was raised. Another conflict that arises is Shug Avery’s controversial career. Most women did not have careers in this time because they were completely dependent on their husbands. The rare working women were typically employed as nannies or housekeepers, not such provocative professions like Shug’s. The general public looks down on Shug and acts as if she is dirty because she has an irregular job. Mr. ___’s father and the priest both talk about Shug as if she is nasty and unclean.
