The company image is linked to the go green movement throughout the country. If it can be shown to potential customers the environment is a major concern, it may bring more business. Alternative fuel vehicles are linked to improved air quality, renewable fuel sources, and decreased dependence on imported oil. When the vehicles produce lower emissions, they lower the company’s carbon footprint. The fact that alternative fueled vehicles and hybrids use fewer oil products also helps to reduce the national dependency on imported oil. With the air quality and oil…

Environmental responsibility has become a part of social responsibility. Managers seek to save energy and reduce waste for the environment. With increased demands on natural resources and global warming, more and more managers see conservation as an important part of giving back to society. Managers put this into action through green architecture, green transportation fleets and increased emphasis on recycling.…
The level of corporate social responsibility that a firm upholds is determined, to an extent, by the nature of the businesses products. This is demonstrated by BP, despite the company actively engaging in some CSR policies, goods such as oil are inherently harmful for the environment and therefore society. In 2010 BP failed to act successfully in socially responsible manner as 210million gallons of oil was spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. It can be argued that the main reason the company failed to act in a socially responsible manner is due to the nature of the product it produces as oil extraction is a complex process and any problems during extraction can have catastrophic consequences for the environment. It is generally considered that people who buy oil from BP won’t be concerned with the environment as they are purchasing products that have notable negative externalities. This in turn limits the incentive for BP to engage in CSR as customers will purchase their goods regardless of CSR so significant CSR activities will only increase costs and reduce company profits. To the extent that the product determines whether a firm acts successfully in a socially responsible manner depends on how strong the demand is for the product and the customers and stakeholder’s views on CSR.…

Most want to make money in a responsible way is an assumption that many make, however, getting an organization to follow through with this thought can be quite challenging. Getting a framework in place that can start an organization on a sustainable path. Frameworks like the International Organization for Standardization ISO 26000 social responsibility platform “provides guidance on how businesses and organizations can operate in a socially responsible way” (ISO, 2010)Using this framework to implement new fundamental goals and initiatives in regards to becoming socially responsible and sustainable, is a key factor in starting an organization off on the right track. Without having to feel that they are greenwashing or not implementing policies and procedures correctly. “In general, ISO 26000 acknowledges that ‘social responsibility should be an integral part of a core organizational strategy” (Hahn, 2012, p.…
Why is the environmental objective important? As time has elapsed over the years, there has been an increased awareness of the environment and the necessity to protect it. With that said, the author of the article attempts to convey the importance of an environmental objective, because in today’s society, more and more emphasis is being placed upon the preservation of the environment. And, if an organization includes this fifth objective, it can be considered a competitive edge, highlighting their desire to show their appreciation for the environment amongst legislation, and stakeholders.…
Company Q and Social Responsibility Social responsibility is a key attribute for businesses in the market today. When consumers look to spend their disposable income, they look for businesses that not only offer the right product, at the right price, but that also offer great service. Great service can include anything from friendly employees to community involvement. That is where social responsibility becomes apparent in a company’s ethics and values. If a company has a strong tie to the community and demonstrates social responsibility, their consumers will consider this a positive quality and it will separate them from the competition. In this case study with Company Q, they are lacking in the area of social responsibility. There are three major areas where the company can immediately make positive changes to improve their social standing in the neighborhoods where they operate. Making these changes and becoming more socially responsible is crucial for this company to see longevity as a business and to increase their market share. They will eventually lose patrons and income if they are not careful with how they manage their company’s interaction with their community. The first area for them to review is the closing of stores in high crime areas. Company Q has cited the reason for closing these stores as low sales and lost revenues in that area. Closing these stores has negative impacts on the company image. Consider the employees that are now without work. Even the extended community could view Company Q as the “bad guy.” It can be displayed as an attitude that the company cares more about the bottom line than the people in the area that would potentially be supporting the company. To improve in this area, Company Q should be challenged to interact with the community to determine why their sales are lower and what products would be beneficial to the neighborhood. Since the neighborhood is not as affluent as…
It should be brought to the vice president’s attention, should they adopt a corporate social responsibility role, the company is looking out for the environment and the economy. This would be useful to them because if the economy takes a greater down turn it could have an adverse effect on them. So by providing voluntary pro-pollution reduction strategies may produce a motivating factor to the consumers to support the company. The argument could be presented…

Environmental management course is very much required in the B-school curriculum. Environmental management can be so important because our environment gives a part of what we are whether our culture are dirty people or clean, it is also nice to live in a nice, clean place which is not polluted. It is also important to get people live in that place if a certain city, country is polluted no one will think of living there and visitors will have a negative point of view on that place. Environmental management is not, as the phrase could suggest the management of the environment as such, but rather the management of interaction by the modern human societies with, and impact upon the environment. The three main issues that affect managers are those involving politics (networking), programs (projects) and resources (money, facilities, etc.). The need for environmental management can be viewed from a variety of perspectives. A more common philosophy and impetus behind environmental management is the concept of carrying capacity. Simply put, carrying capacity refers to the maximum number of organisms a particular resource can sustain. Environmental management is therefore not the conservation of the environment solely for the environment's sake, but rather the conservation of the environment for humankind's sake.…
