Definition:
The study of human behavior, attitudes, and performance in organizations

1. O.B. is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups and structures have on behavior within organizations for the purpose of applying such knowledge towards improving an organization’s effectiveness. 2. O.B. can be defined as the systematic study of the actions and reactions of individuals, groups and sub-systems. 3. O.B. is the study and understanding of individual and group behavior, patterns of structure in order to to help improve organizational performance and effectiveness. 4. O.B. is one of the most complex and perhaps least understood academic elements of modern general management, but since it concerns the behaviour of people within organizations it is also one of the most central- its concern with individual and group patterns of behavior makes it an essential element in dealing with the complex behavioral issues thrown up in the modern business world. 5. O.B. is an inter-disciplinary behavior science studying phenomena and dynamics (processes) of organizations and their various units.

ORIGINS OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR

Many of the important contributions to Organizational Behavior have come from Psychology.
Psychological theories have helped us explain and predict individual behavior. Many of the theories are dealing with personality; attitude, learning, motivation, and stress have been applied in Organizational Behavior to understand work-related phenomena such as job satisfaction, commitment, absenteeism, turnover, and worker well-being.
Sociologists, studying the structure and function of small groups within a society have contributed greatly to a more complete understanding of behavior within organizations.
Taking their cue from Sociologists, scholars in the field of Organizational Behavior have studied the effects of the structure and functions of work organization on the behavior of groups, as well

    Organisational Behaviour (in short called as OB) is concerned with the study of the behaviour and interaction of people in restricted or organised settings. It involves understanding people and predicting their behaviour, and knowledge of the means by which their behaviour is influenced and shaped. Organisations are bodies or entities created for a stated purpose They may consist of one or more people. In the case of a sole trader or single operator, he needs to build relationships with suppliers, contractors, customers, clients, and the community. For those that consist of more than one person, internal as well as external relationships have to be created and maintained. OB is thus of great concern to anyone who organises, creates, orders, directs, manages, or supervises the activities of others. It is also of concern to those who build relationships between individuals, groups of people, different parts of organisation between different organisation, for all these activities are founded on human interactions. OB is therefore concerned with:1. The purposes for which organisations are created 2. The behaviour of individuals, and an understanding of the pressures and influences that cause them to act and react in particular ways. 3. The qualities that individuals bring to particular situations. 4. The creation of groups i.e., collections of people brought together for given purposes. 5. The background and context within which activities take place. 6. The relationships and interactions with the wider environment with other organisations and groups. 7. Robbins and Judge (2007, P. 9) defined that ‘OB is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behaviour within organisations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organisation’s effectiveness.’ While, Nahavandi and Malekzadeh (1999, P. 3) points out that ‘OB is the study of how people behave in organisations as individuals, teams and how the organisations structure human resources to achieve goals.’ Comparing these two long definitions on OB, I would rather go along with the statement by Mcshane and Travaglione (2007, P. 4), where it says that OB is the study of what people think, feel and do in and around organisations. It’s so much easier to grasp and understand the gist of OB especially to students like me. What all these experts are trying to say is actually the same and what they had done is only putting their own thoughts into words. This signifies that we humans have a lot of views on one issue, it can be either the same or different, there’s no right or wrong either, it’s just a matter of how we perceive things.
