The California Department of Education specifies goals for ELD students to “…read, analyze, interpret, and create a variety of literary and informational text types…. [and] they demonstrate knowledge of content through…writing tasks.” In addition, “…English learners at all levels engage in intellectually challenging literacy, disciplinary, and disciplinary literacy tasks” (California Department of Education, 2012, p. 86). The goals for ELD students are extremely similar to the six shifts in the ELA Common Core Standards in which: students read, analyze, and gather evidence to support their reading; then use the information they have retrieved to write constructively. When I think about struggling readers and what strategies will help them better their reading skills but also develop their vocabulary knowledge. Working on the vocabulary development is essential to learning reading or bettering skills. Building one’s vocabulary is essential and much needed for the struggling readers. There’s no one way that any student should or could have too many words in their own vocabulary. If one person doesn’t know a vocabulary word, I would recommend that the person who is trying to build their vocabulary and reading skills is to look up the word to gain knowledge and information. Another different strategy that I felt would be beneficial in the child or person trying to better their skills is by learning through…

I help them to develop effective word-learning strategies such as how to use dictionaries and other reference aids, how to use information about word parts to figure out the meanings of words in texts, and how to use context clues to determine word meanings. They could learn that to know a word well means knowing what it means, how to pronounce it, and how its meaning changes in different contexts. Students were stimulated to construct sentences providing clear examples of word meaning in context. This assignment mainly addresses the Reading Competency and Instructional Delivery and Facilitation indicators since I did relate and integrate the subject matter with life experiences. I sequenced the lesson and concepts to ensure coherence and required prior knowledge. The class was delivered in an engaging and challenging way using higher-order questioning techniques, applying different instructional strategies and resources, including appropriate…

Constance O’Sullivan According to the research of Baker, Simmons and Kameenui of the University of Oregon on “Vocabulary Acquisition: Synthesis of Research” new learning builds on what the learner already knows. Critical factors that contribute to vocabulary development include generalized linguistic differences, memory deficit, differences in strategies for learning new words, differential instructional procedures and depth of word knowledge. Through depth of word knowledge is association, comprehension and generation. Research suggests that after the age of seven the ease in which a student gains vocabulary levels off. Thus vocabulary growth varies among students and as a result the vocabulary gap grows increasingly larger over time. Because of this the study of vocabulary is considered boring if it is not accompanied by an activity. There are two ways to pursue this; the first is through an interactive student/computer program complete with bells and whistles. The second…
