Oppression Against Women
It is no secret that woman have been facing various types of oppression for centuries. Gender equality is a crucial element for democratic countries; both women and men should participate as equals in the social, cultural and economic life (Michailidis, Morphitou, Theophylatou, 2012). Although over the last decade improvements have been made, gender equality is still not achieved due to the fact that men and woman are not represented and are not treated equally in the workplace(Michailidis, Morphitou, Theophylatou, 2012). This essay will examine the ways in which woman face oppression in the workplace along with factors that play a role in these obstacles. Through understanding “Sexual Harassment: Violence Against Women in the Workplace” it can be understood that one in every two woman will face violence in the workplace, this is often degrading, traumatizing and often violent(Fitzgereld,1993). Unfortunately, this is a norm several woman fear when entering the workplace, one that men often do not. Lastly, this essay will explain the idea of the pay gap. Through the works of “Pay Differences Among the Highly Trained: Cohort Differences in the Sex Gap in Lawyers' Earnings” the idea of the pay gap can support the idea of inequality in the workplace, this article outlines different occupations, and the pay gap between woman and man in these specific industries. Women are continually feeling the effects of the pay gap, and continue to feel inequality in the workforce. Although people say inequality in the workplace is no longer an existing problem in society however, inequality can be seen through, the lack of and promotional opportunity in the workplace, along with sexualisation in the workforce and finally the pay gap between males and females who are performing the same job.
