Same-sex marriages have become a central point in today’s society and there are numerous viewpoints on the subject. This paper outlines some of the issues at stake in this debate. Also this paper attempts to cover the main areas and makes arguments that same-sex marriage should not be legalized.
The topic of same-sex marriage is a very controversial debate. There are many heated arguments that are for and against the legalization of same-sex marriage. The people that are in favor of same-sex marriage says that the aspect of love, relationships and understanding should override all other issues. Others that oppose this concept argue that there are several factors that stray away from the acceptance of same-sex marriage. Marriage is an institution in modern society and holds high significance among many groups that have high morales and holds on strongly to their values. Many authorities in society feel that same-sex marriage would create serious problems.
As a result, a debate titled “A Debate on Gay Marriage” was published. It states the supporting beliefs of the writer Andrew Sullivan from his book, “Virtually Normal; An Argument about Homosexuality” and the opposing arguments of William J. Bennett, a prominent cultural conservative, which first appeared as an op-ed column in the Washington Post. The debate entails key arguments as to why same-sex marriages should be made legal and opposing arguments stating what the unification of gay couples can do to the institution of marriage. According to Sullivan, “marriage is not simply a private contract; it is a social and public recognition of a private commitment” and being so it should be made available to any two citizens. He also mentions that commitment among “heterosexual” and “homosexuals” is identical due to certain vows that are made by both parties.
