Brazil, officially known as the Federative Republic of Brazil, is a South American country which has recently transitioned from a regional to a global power (U.S. Dept. of State, 2011). This is primarily due to the country’s real gross domestic products which have created surging exports and economic growth. The economic growth of Brazil in recent years has lifted tens of millions of Brazilians from poverty to upper middle class citizens (U.S. Dept. of State, 2011). This has increased domestic consumption (a component of aggregate demand) and therefore the increase in the real gross domestic products as a result of the increases in aggregate supply and demand (Editorial Board, 2011).…

Despite a slowdown in the last couple of years, Brazil has been a remarkable success story in the last decade. Economic growth in the country has led to a rapid expansion of the middle class there – from 66 million people in 2003 to 105 million in 2011 (Hanna, 2012). Per capita GDP grew at an 11.8% compound annual growth rate between 2000 and 2011 (O’Neill, 2012). Building on its strong industrial base, with a wealth of natural resources, Brazil is expected to continue growing strongly in the coming years.…

The primary question that Brazil faces as it moves into the 21st century is whether the Brazilian style of capitalism, which harnessed their economy towards growth as a developing economy, is sufficient to drive them as a developed country. Averaging 3.8% GDP growth over the last decade, this transition seems inevitable; Brazil has shifted from an agricultural giant to a country in which 90% of the population works in the industrial and service sectors. However, as they make this conversion, they must examine their economic policies to ensure that they are still applicable and advantageous. For example, Brazil must keep promoting their industrial policies. Brazil may fall back into a commodity-driven economy if raw materials continue to be a focus of their free trade efforts. Petroleum production nearly doubled from 2000-2010, from 1222 barrels per day to 2152 barrels per day. Overspecialization is probable and undesirable in order for the economy to not fall backwards into growing away from secondary and tertiary sector growth.…

For Brazil, they have launched an active campaign to build a strong international competitive position in the IT off-shoring business, trying to attract business that might otherwise be going to these other nations or regions. They have a sophisticated telecommunications and network availability. They also have a strong engineering school and capable of producing high quality technical graduates. Employee turnover is only about 20 percent, versus the 40 percent rate in India. They are only a single time zone difference from the east coast of the United States compare to the rest of the world.
