Eyes are a complex part of the body. Sight helps people do simple tasks with ease. Many painful problems can occur in the eyes. Without ophthalmologists, blindness and poor eyesight would occur more often. Many people already have seeing impairments and those rates would go up even more. Ophthalmologists help take care of the fragile sight in human’s eyes. People are beginning to live longer, so the elderly have more eye problems. There will always be the need for eye doctors and surgeons. “Ophthalmologists are physicians who specialize in the care of eyes and in prevention and treatment of eye disease and injury” (Encyclopedia of Career and Vocational Guidance 814). They are the only practitioners who can treat all eye disorders (Ophthalmologists 602). This profession gives eye exams and checkups. If needed, they can also prescribe glasses and contact lenses. When a patient comes into an office, their medical history is taken, eyes are examined, and their eye vision is tested. The physician recommends a treatment and usually prescribes medication. A bachelor’s degree and four years of medical school is required. To get into medical school one needs to pass the Admission Test, be involved in extracurricular activities, have leadership skills, and obtain good character. At least one year of internship and three years of a residency program is needed. If a person wants to sub-specialize in a subject one to two more years is essential (“Ophthalmologist”). To get into the field of ophthalmology, a person must pass an “Ophthalmology Course of Education” test and pass written and oral exams from the “American Board of Education”.
