EXAMPLE OF REAL-TIME SYSTEM
Real-time operating systems that I have come in contact with, in order of (subjective) impact: VxWorks, QNX, eCos, RTLinux. Especially VxWorks has a long history in critical applications - for example, in cars and various NASA space platforms. It is however neither free nor open source software - I would probably prefer eCos or RTLinux in one of my own projects.
EXAMPLE OF EMBEDDED SYSTEM

2) Palm OS
3) Symbian OS
4) PenPoint OS
5) NetBSD

The UNIX and Linux Operating Systems (OS) are open source systems. The first version of UNIX was created in 1969 by computer scientist Kenneth Thompson at AT&T Bell Laboratories. The system was based on four parts: the shell, kernel, editor, and the assembler. Linux was created as a free software substitute to the commercial UNIX environments. The history of Linux dates back to 1983 and Linux runs a much greater range of platforms than most UNIX environments. Both OS share a common foundation because of the history and tradition.…

Introduction To WindowsThe history of Microsoft Windows dates back to 1985, when Microsoft released Microsoft Windows Version 1.01. Microsoft’s aim was to provide a friendly user-interface known as a GUI (graphical user interface) which allowed for easier navigation of the system features. Windows 1.01 never really caught on. (The amazing thing about Windows 1.01 is that it fitted on a single floppy disk!). In 1987 Microsoft revamped the operating system and released Windows 2.03. The GUI was very slightly improved but still looked too similar to Windows 1.01. The operating system again failed to capture a wide audience.…

A multi-user operating system allows multiple users to access a computer system concurrently. Time-sharing system can be classified as multi-user systems as they enable a multiple user access to a computer through the sharing of time. Single-user operating systems, as opposed to a multi-user operating system, are usable by a single user at a time. Being able to use multiple accounts on a Windows operating system does not make it a multi-user system. Rather, only the network administrator is the real user. But for a UNIX-like operating system, it is possible for two users to login at a time and this capability of the OS makes it a multi-user operating system.…
