In the early 1990s all athletes that wore undershirts were made of cotton and caused the players to be hot and sweaty during and after the game. In 1996 the special team’s captain on the university of Maryland football team got an idea. Kevin plank thought to himself “there has to be a better idea” After he graduated, he was determined to figure out something better. He wanted a shirt that stayed light and dry no matter how hot it was. After searching all around New York’s famous garment district for fabric samples, Plank finally came out with his first shirt, which he then gave to his Maryland teammates and friends who’d gone on to play in the NFL. With their feedback, he went back to work, quickly emerging with a revolutionary new T-shirt built from microfibers that wicked moisture and kept athletes cool, dry, and light. After graduation, he set out to make a superior T–shirt—one that stayed light in even the nastiest heat. After driving through the night to New York’s famous garment district for fabric samples, Plank built his first prototype, which he then gave to his Maryland teammates and friends who’d gone on to play in the NFL. With their feedback, he went back to work, quickly emerging with a revolutionary new T-shirt built from microfibers that wicked moisture and kept athletes cool, dry, and light. With his design nearly perfect, Plank needed funds to launch his apparel line, so he maxed out his credit cards to the tune of $40,000 and set up a company in his grandmother’s basement in Washington, DC. Twelve months later, he made his first team sale to Georgia Tech. Other major Division I teams followed in droves, along with two dozen NFL teams. The company soon moved its headquarters to South Baltimore where it developed its now-famous gear lines, which included Heat Gear, Cold Gear, and All Season Gear. The revolution had officially begun. In 1999, Warner Brothers contracted Under Armour to outfit its actors for two upcoming football…

The first time I flipped through a Thrasher magazine, I was drawn to the artwork and imagery of the ads as equally as the skateboarding itself. Skateboarding was unlike any other sport I had played up to that point. It was more like art than a sport, with each brand portraying a unique identity and style. And unlike a team name or logo in other sports, the artwork and messaging of each brand was intentionally reflected the background, the interests, and beliefs of the riders on the team and the people behind it. Later through studying art and design I learned that wasn’t a new idea skateboard brands invented, but it was those brands that introduced me to the real power of branding and piqued my interest in it. Now in my career as a designer thus far, no matter what the nature of the project, I’ve strived to communicate a story about each product or brand that is unique and engaging. Just like the great designers I admire and those skateboard brands I idolized growing up. Additionally, majority of my personal design work uses artwork, visual references and typography with historical and cultural significance to communicate the intended…

Powershirts is a potential e-tailing partner for a clothing manufacturer located in Guadalajara, Mexico. The information we were given about Powershirts and the manufacturer is very limited, and we had no direct contact with management. The manufacturer has sold shirts in the Mexican market and has also sold men's slacks in the United States under a label undisclosed to us. They can produce shirts in any color; sleeve length, weight, and can add a logo to their products. While we do not have specifics regarding plant capacity, financial resources, or cost information, we have been told they have sufficient capacity and financial reserves to expand. Our goal has been to consider potential markets Powershirts may enter, and to prepare a general marketing plan, including web site design and content.…

Team T-Shirt expects significant competition within the t-shirt industry. Some of the more prominent incumbents in this space include specialty retailers such as Urban Outfitters, mass retailers such as Target and Internet retailers such as Palmer Cash and Busted Tees. Although there is significant competition, Team T-Shirt is confident that its products occupy a gap created by the aforementioned competitors. Specifically, while all competitors are good at creating designs, either based on classic popular culture or a new fad, it does not cater any of its designs to a specific social group (e.g., college students majoring in chemistry). Team T-Shirt aims to identify as many numerically-significant social groups as possible based on several dimensions to market its products. Then, through research and development, it will create designs that will appeal to these social groups in their efforts to express themselves.…
