Online Newspaper vs. Print Version
Newspaper designers have a huge canvas to play with. Their designs can be striking and yet intricate and pack much more impact than a web page; especially because the entire double-page spread is in-your-face in a fraction of a second. Wham, here's the news.

The page in the figure is a great example of the possibilities in print: a large, high-resolution map sets the stage for a story about Chile and does double duty as an information graphic for several data nuggets. More data is visualized in smaller graphics around the page. And, of course, there is room for a large amount of text that is set in high-resolution type and nicely integrated with the headlines and graphics in a pleasing over-all layout that allows the eye to move from overview to details in a fraction of a second.

The above image does not do justice to the awards book which is printed in super-high resolution on heavy-duty glossy paper. In the book, it is possible to actually read the body text on the page. For online, I had to squeeze the JPEG quality down quite a bit in order to achieve the required 10-second download time for modem users. Another benefit of print!

Dimensionality
Print design is 2-dimensional, with much attention paid to layout. It is obviously possible for the reader to turn the page, but substantial interplay between different spreads is rare. Typically, each view is a design unit created for a fixed size canvas - often a big canvas when designing newspapers or posters.
In contrast, Web design is simultaneously 1-dimensional and N-dimensional.

A web page is fundamentally a scrolling experience for the user as opposed to a canvas experience. A small amount of 2-dimensional layout is possible, but not to the extent of creating a pre-planned experience with a fixed spatial relationship between elements. Users often begin scrolling before all elements have been rendered, and different users will scroll the page in different ways throughout their reading

Ray Parslow is one of those people. He works with drawn, painted, photographed, computer-generated images (pictures), but he also designs the letterforms that make up various typefaces found in movie credits and TV ads; in books, magazines, and menus; and even on computer screens. He also creates, chooses, and organizes these elements-typography, images, and the so-called “white space” around them-to communicate a message. Graphic design is a part of his daily life.…

The story I chose to write about is “Batu Caves at risk of caving in” which was published in The Star newspaper on Friday, 26th October. The story is about a condominium project that is going to be developed in close vicinity to Batu Caves. The project, if allowed to be carried out, can potentially cause the historical site to cave in much sooner than expected as the development may accelerate the limestone massif’s natural erosion process. The developer, Dolomite Industries, has been ordered to stop all construction-related works by the state government in order for soil testing to be conducted in the area. However, the results from the soil test would not prove the ground and caves safe from collapsing. Alternatively, MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel has suggested the state government to either identify land in a different area for the condominium project or compensate Dolomite Industries.…

Electronic ink is a pioneering invention that combines all the desired features of a modern electronic display and the sheer convenience and physical versatility of sheet of paper. E-paper or electronic paper is sometimes called radio paper or smart paper. Paper would be perfect except for one obvious thing: printed words can 't change. The effort is to create a dynamic high-resolution electronic display that 's thin and flexible enough to become the next generation of paper. The technology has been identified and developed is well under way. Within five years, it is envisioned electronic books that can display volumes of information as easily as flipping a page and permanent newspapers that update themselves daily via wireless broadcast. They deliver the readability of paper…

Harrower (2012) stressed that aside from ensuring all four edges of the story needs to be align with each other, the shapes of text blocks often appear to be a challenge as journalist tries to fit their stories on a page. Generally, this newspaper practises Harrower’s rule as most of its stories are in rectangle shape except for page 62 and 63 as both text block and the overall story shape are in odd shape. Wheildon (1986) revealed that the basic reading eye movement is from the top left to the bottom right of the page. The messy and bad text arrangement on these pages not only causes confusion to readers but also difficulty in reading. Hence, these two pages have the worst layout and design in this…

As printing and book production developed in the 15th century, advances in graphic design developed alongside it over subsequent centuries, with compositors or typesetters often designing pages as they set the type.…

The term “broadsheet” is used both to refer to a generic paper size, and to specific types of publications which have historically been produced on broadsheets. However, recent developments in e-book readers, such as the Amazon Kindle and the iPad, have paved the way for e-books to take the spotlight. Now, users of these e-book readers enjoy a large amount of benefits better offered by these products. Along with the ability to read in the dark, users can also access a huge library within one product. They can highlight and annotate these electronic documents in new, crisper screens, yet unlike with books, they do not have to risk any permanence in their markings. It almost seems that every advantage of paper book had been one-upped by the e-book market.…
