CHARACTERS

JAKE: 40's, managerial type.

TERESA: late 50's, a gentle elementary school teacher.

MERRIK: late 30's, a born-again Christian.

DEBBIE: 30's, bright, tough, and angry.

KIM, 20's, waif like, depressed.

Time/Place/Scene: A suburban church basement, used as the office of a nonprofit support service for the unemployed, with a couple of desks, an elaborate answering machine with two phones: one real, one facade with a recorded message saying "executive offices" -- which this obviously isn't. There is a card table, folding chairs, newspapers, trade magazines.

TERESA is sitting on a folding chair at the desk , talking to JAKE, who is consulting THE JOB FINDER'S GUIDE and taking notes in a notebook from his briefcase.

DEBBIE enters, looks around.

TERESA I wear an extra sweater and a hat. That's what my mother did when she was a girl, during the Depression. The kitchen stove was their heat. (notices DEBBIE) Can we be of help, dear?

DEBBIE Group's supposed to be at 10:30, isn't it?

TERESA Yes, but--

DEBBIE I'll wait. ( DEBBIE sits, takes out newspaper, begins reading.)

TERESA (to JAKE) How is Janet doing?

JAKE Better. Takes her a couple weeks to bounce back from chemotherapy. But she's up and around, now. Cleaning out the kitchen drawers.

TERESA And your boy?

JAKE I told Park School I was going to have to pull Jason out of there. (sits) They came up with a scholarship.

TERESA (pats JAKE's shoulder) Well, now. That's good news.

JAKE Is it? Jason's grades are dropping. He's out too late, comes back with bullshit --sorry. You'd think that being out of work I'd have time to ride herd on him, but with hustling a job and taking care of Janet--.

TERESA A boy that age can be a real pill. Especially at a time of crisis.

JAKE You're telling me this is normal?

TERESA I saw it my boys. There's stress, and a boy feels

Jake Mazursky (Ben Foster), one of Johnny's friends and part-time distributors, is shown interrupting dinner to ask his father for money to pay a drug debt ($1200). After Jake is denied by his father and stepmother, his 15-year-old half-brother Zach (Anton Yelchin) asks to come along with him, which Jake doesn't allow. Later, at one of his many parties, Johnny meets Jake. When Jake tells Johnny that he has failed to collect a drug debt for him, they fight over the money. The fight culminates in Johnny pulling a pistol on Jake and kicking him out of his house after Mazursky gets the upper hand in the brawl. Jake decides to continue the fight by salting an insurance fraud set up by Johnny and a mutual friend, costing Truelove $30,000. In retaliation, Johnny calls Mazursky's boss, claiming to be Jake's parole officer, and tells the boss that Mazursky has been getting in trouble breaking into houses and using speed. As a result Mazursky loses his job and only other means of income. As an ex-con, Jake's chances of finding another job are slim, and he becomes furious with Johnny. Jake and several armed friends therefore break into and trash Johnny's house and steal his television. Although armed, Johnny does not confront them, but hides until they leave.…

Literature can be expressive. It can be expressed in many different ways. Some use writing, some use pictures and print, or even dramatic and musical works of art. In this essay I will be using the Reader-Response Approach to analyze a piece of literature. I have chosen the short play I’m Going! A Comedy in One Act, by dramatist Tristan Bernard. I will include why the literary work captured my interest, how it made me feel, and how it has formed or change my connection with literature.…

    Seminar Play Analysis

On November 20th I went to the Black Box theatre to see the play Seminar. It was a small production, and there were only five actors. Going into the play, I had no idea what to expect. I had heard the play was a bit raunchy, with explicit dialogue and provocative scenes. The play started out with four actors portraying college graduate writers. I loved how realistic the setting was; it really looked like somebody’s real apartment. The actors did very well portraying emotion, and every thing they did and said I could relate to. At one point, a girl was eating real ice cream and complaining on the couch to her friend. I thought it was funny how every girl could relate to that scene. I also liked that the actor had no problem devouring ice cream on top of memorizing her lines and acting at the same time. I would find it hard not to focus on anything other than the delicious taste of the ice cream.…

    Wicked Play Critique

In seventh grade, I was first introduced into the theatre world by a group of my eighth grade friends singing a song I had never heard before. I did not have the time to ask them what it was called, but they told me it was from a musical called Wicked; the song in question was called “What is This Feeling?”, though at the time, all I knew was that it was about some people hating each other; back then, I’d believed it to be a love song between the Wicked Witch of the West and some unnamed male lead. I did not know anything about the musical other than it was about the Wicked Witch of the West and how she was supposedly good. This, being a novel concept to me, seemed idiotic, and I rejected the notion of such a silly musical. Since then, I had heard from numerous people that this was a great musical, and by the time I came to Parkview in 2009, I’d grown to be fed up with all of this talk of witches and scarecrows and something about gravity. I gave in, decided to try and find the soundtrack on iTunes, but, as these things go, I forgot about it almost immediately.…

In order for a classroom to be truly inclusive classroom management considerations have to be addressed. Will the classroom atmosphere be conducive to learning for all students and how will the climate be modified or adapted to meet these needs? How will classroom goals and rules be established and are they visible and clearly stated in the classroom? Are academic standards clearly stated and visible in the classroom? Does the teacher effectively utilize differentiated instructional strategies for all students? Is the classroom arranged in a manner to accentuate student learning, for example: how are the desks arranged, is there a student seating plan in place, are bulletin or display boards cluttered and distracting, are there technology resources available to the students in the classroom? Are the teachers utilizing flexible co-teaching models in the classroom and is planning time scheduled to create effective lesson planning?…

    Everyman

“Everyman” was written by an unknown author during the Medieval time period of the late 1400’s. The plays deal with what a person needs to do in order to be saved. It touches on many different ways to be saved such as: how a person is to act, the good deeds they have done and the acts they must accomplish to be saved. Each Character plays its own role in the play that brings to life what it truly means for Everyman to be whom he is. Everyman deals with great temptation and good deeds, but he really does not deal well with all he needs to throughout the play. Everyman is more concerned about who he can get to accompany him more than making sure his life and heart is right with Christ. By the end of the play Everyman is pleading with Christ to save him. Death in this story plays the biggest role for Everyman. The author’s perspective of death goes beyond the grave, it becomes spiritual. Biblical perspective of death is similar in that death should be seen as a spiritual rite of passage.…
