On the Waterfront is a film that is as problematic as it is extraordinary, Director Elia Kazan’s beliefs are demonstrated within his main characters in “on the Waterfront”. Elia Kazan demonstrates his beliefs and situation through his character’s, such as explaining him testifying on his colleagues and such as relating the communist party to the mafia. Kazan throughout the movie tries to demonstrate his theories and philosophies though his main characters of the movie, many like terry, Edie, father Barry and more.
The film opens at a point where a handful of longshoremen have decided they can no longer bear being exploited. Frustrated by other men growing rich and fat from his and his father’s hard work, Joey Doyle agrees to testify to the Waterfront Crime Commission about the restrictive and illegal practices taking place on the wharves. When Johnny Friendly and his gang get wind of Joey’s plans to testify, they decide to shut him up. Employing the cold-blooded tactics that have entrenched their power, the union heavies get Terry Malloy to call Joey onto the roof, with the pretext that he has one of his pigeons. Terry, a washed-up boxer whose brother Charley is Friendly’s right-hand man, was a willing participant, believing that all the gang was going to do “was rough him up a bit.” However, after Joey is thrown off the roof to his death, terry seems to feel bad and confused as he has being tricked to do something he did not intended. This relates to Elia Kazan’s situation, as a communist Elia Kazan did not like what he was in and what was happening within the party, therefore seeking for salvation, Elia ends up testifying against his colleagues , just like terry did to the mafia at the end of the film.

The social value of loyalty is embodied in the characters of On the Waterfront. Edie, Charley and Father Barry all display loyalties. The longshoremen, too, are loyal to Friendly’s gang, they “don’t ask any questions”

This film focuses on the balance between our moral conscience, and our need for survival. It explores how much we are influenced by our own need for survival compared to our sense of justice. Kazan, utilizes characters like Terry, to explore the limits of human tolerance and the conscience. He depicts a world shrouded in a blanket of fog and mist, which masks the criminality, corruption and immorality. Kazan uses this money-driven world, to accentuate the economic and moral plight of the longshoremen. Through the influences of people like Edie Doyle and Father Barry, we see how hope can help us in our quest to disregard our fears of those that oppress us. In addition, we also see that the battle between our morality and our need to protect ourselves is difficult. We note that the need for courage to take a stand and do the right thing is important. This is shown mostly in Terry, but characters like Kayo and Joey Doyle also prove themselves to prefer justice to security.…

    On the Waterfront, directed by Elia Kazan in 1954, portrays Terry Malloy, the protagonist of the film, who goes on a journey to redeem himself for the murder of Joey Doyle. Terry, a former prize fighter, could have been a “contender” but now is a “bum” under the command of Johnny Friendly, a corrupt union boss.     In “The Boat” by Alistair Macleod, the boat, and the ill-fitting clothes he wore significantly represent the confinement and the father’s inability to break free from tradition, reinforcing that tradition can suppress one’s dream for greater things. To begin, the boat itself is a symbol of the fathers bounding to the sea, showing his obligation to follow customs. The boat is categorize with a “marine clutch and a high speed reverse gear and was painted on an oblong plate across her stern. Jenny Lynn had been my mother’s maiden name and the boat was called after her as another link in the chain of tradition”(Macleod 3) The high speed reverse gear depicts how the father is not moving forward along with the light green name of Jenny Lynn that demonstrates the father’s sacrifice for the fishing custom to support his family. The Jenny Lynn that he receives through tradition gives him a constant reminder that his way of life may never change and that his dreams are out of his reach. Furthermore, the clothing in his closet symbolizes the father’s imprisonment with tradition. The narrator mentions “his ill-fitted serge suit, the two or three white shirts that strangled him and the square black shoes that pinched” (Macleod 4) The square black shoes that pinched him means that the life of fishing that he inherits does not fit, the life he lives is simply to overpowering that it damages him. The white shirts that suffocates him shows the struggles he faces everyday that he is unable to separate from. His attire is so inflexible that it was leaving him trapped in one place incapable to grasp his own desires. Lastly, at the father’s death his departure speculates that it is suicide to liberate his son and himself from an unhappy future bringing the fishing tradition with him.     Elia Kazan’s film, “On the Waterfront”, tells the story of a washed up ex-boxer named Terry Malloy and his fight against the organised crime syndicate controlling the shipping docks of Hoboken, New Jersey in 1954, but more importantly, according to Kazan himself: “This motion picture is about one thing only: a young man who has let his dignity slip away, and regains it.” Under Kazan’s direction, a variety of filming techniques and repeated symbols and motifs are carefully utilised to constantly support Terry’s self-perception throughout the film. However, it is this judgement of himself which evolves as a result of his profound development in both his character and his conviction to act upon his underlying moral values during the course of the film; from a lazy, insignificant “bum”, to a “somebody” who is respected for the sacrifices which he makes on behalf of his community.
