The older adult I interviewed was a 90-year-old female. She was born August 21, 1926 in her home on the farm. This resident grew up in farming community known as Farming, Minnesota. Farming is a small town located in between Albany and Richmond. Her father was an interpreter during World War II for the Germans for 37 years. He even interpreted during the Nuremberg Trials. When he wasn’t busy interpreting German to English, he was a farmer and carpenter. He had partnered with a carpenter and would do carpentry work for some extra cash. The carpenter would then, in return, work on the farm milking cows. Her mother stayed at home to help on the farm and kept busy with the kids. The kids were all responsible for their chores on the farm. There were usually no consequences for misbehaving since the kids always listened to their parents about what work needed to be done for the day and did their jobs. Of course there were a couple sibling feuds about who was the best milker, but in the end, all of the siblings agreed it was my resident. Growing up, this resident spent a lot of time with her cousins because they were also her neighbors. One of her favorite stories to tell is riding a horse to school with her cousin because they were in “war time” and ended up being an hour early at the bus stop. I was a bit confused by what she meant when she was referring to “war time”, so my resident informed me that it means day light savings time. This resident went to high school, but took a year off (9th grade) to stay home and help her mother on the farm. Although she never attended college, she wishes she could have but it was too expensive for her family to afford at the time. Her first job was at a grocery store as a cashier. She then worked at a laundry mat but ended up settling in Coldspring, Minnesota after the kids were born to work as a cook at the Rocorri school. She ended up cooking there for 30
