Old Spice Commercial Analysis: Windsurfing
Old Spice commercial; "Windsurfing" is a thirty-seconds commercial, published on YouTube on September 24, 2015, starring Terry Crews and Isaiah Mustafa. The scenes in the commercial draw an argument between the Old Spice Timber fragrance body spray and Old Spice Bearglove fragrance deodorant. Although both of these products are a high seller on the market, Terry and Mustafa debates in the commercial so that the audience can buy one or both of the products. In the beginning of the commercial, the voiceover is used to narrate the commercial. The male narrator, posturing a warning to the viewer like, "Warning. Ignore all Old Spice commercials except this one." As the narrator speaks to the audience while Isaiah Mustafa's life-size cutout board in a towel, bare-chested is placed in the bathroom, …show more content…
For example, in the commercial Terry says, "Don't use Timber! Use Bear Glove!." This quote states that the commercial's motive is to sell the product and also to claim that both of their Old Spice products are the best. Moreover, in the commercial Mustafa speaks with his body language such as he is bare-chested to grab the attention of the viewers. The commercial implies that the audience should consider using these products. Ethos hopes to motive and build trust with the viewers.

The argument being made appeals to the audience's logos in the Old Spice commercial. In this quote, Mustafa is drawing in male and female viewers attention not only by his words but also with his charm. Mustafa is in a towel, he shows his even toned body and he uses it for attraction. Although, this commercial is not intended for women; it was formulated in a way to convince men that they need Old Spice to be liked by

The advertisers try to build up their credibility with their customers by mentioning the good and positive things you’ll want to hear in order to buy their product. Another way they use ethos is by having the family featured in the commercial use the same pink fluffy blanket they took out of the dryer earlier when they used the softener product last used. Then the family is shown with blanket in different environments like for example in the laundry room, living room, backyard back to the living room and lastly at the drive in. By using the same blanket in several of different environments showing that no matter where you go the softness will still be…

The Swiffer Duster “Are you listening, Morty?” commercial is great in many ways. There is an obvious appeal to ethos, logos, and pathos, which many ads are unable to establish any of let alone all of them, and they are presented in a natural, flowing fashion. The stars of the commercial, Lee and Morty Kaufman, add something special that manages to make the ad memorable and distinct. Because of the nature of the commercial, it is also able to appeal to an extensive audience. All of these things are needed for an ad to be traditionally successful, but the Swiffer Duster commercial manages to go above and beyond this.…

The speaker is an attractive male who does not wear a shirt for the entire commercial, conveniently displaying his athletic physique. The commercial is subconsciously projecting the emotion of sexual appeal, and persuading women to buy Old Spice deodorant because then their man will be just as attractive. The commercial also has several random comments such as tickets turning into diamonds, and the speaker suddenly appearing on a horse to appeal to the emotion of humor in the commercial. By inserting humor, the commercial is more memorable and people associate this good emotion with Old Spice…

Lexus cars are being advertised online for the winter collection sales event. The ad is like a slideshow that catches a viewer’s attention and makes them watch the entire thing in order to see what the advertisement is trying to sell. Ethos is being used to advertise the cars because it convinces the viewer that Lexus is a credible car manufacturer. This is an effective ad because it includes a review from Autotrader that named it the “best luxury certified pre-owned program” and also briefly mentions the warranties on the cars. It encourages people to view their website and look up more details about the sale. Since the company has a good rating and provides useful information in the advertisement, buyers are more likely to trust them and possibly buy a Lexus.…

The commercial grabs the reader’s attention and maintains it on the Old Spice man. It starts out with a former NFL player and an actor Isaiah Mustafa in an ordinary bathroom wearing nothing but a towel. He represents the “perfect male” for both women and as well as men. He is considered manly with the muscular physique, broad shoulders, bearded face and a stern voice. His strong posture and his deep male voice displays the masculine form, the women desire. Without losing eye contact with the audience, Mustafa shifts from a bathroom scene to a yacht, to a beach and lastly to a horseback-riding which portrays that “anything is possible…” with an Old Spice. Throughout his transformations he accomplishes impractical feats like obtaining tickets…

One of the rhetorical appeals used quite frequently is Pathos. Pathos is the way the author or in this case Old Spice tries to play with our emotions. The most obvious emotion in this commercial is humor. For example, the way the crazy-stalker mom is following her son around everywhere by riding in a laundry basket attached to her son’s car, highly unlikely but very entertaining and quite funny. People love anything that makes them laugh and Old Spice definitely played that up when those depressed mothers were wailing about their sons leaving them behind and growing up by going out with girls and leaving their chores behind. Another thing that is used as pathos is how relatable it can be for those overbearing mothers and their sons. Some men must see this commercial and think back to when they were teenagers who just wanted to get away and grow up, and even those boys that are currently going through this with their own mothers. Even I am sucked in to all the hype that is Old Spice, and I could just imagine what my seven year old brother with have to go through with my mom. Yikes!…

Have you ever heard the statement, a man that smells good is automatically attractive"? It's the first thing that I think of when I think of the Old Spice commercials. This ad on YouTube was published on January 3, 2014, shows how mothers are upset and torn when their sons start using Old Spice products. When the boys start using Old Spice, it symbolizes becoming a man.…

To begin, Old Spice’s written advertisement portrays the incentive emasculation of men. It focuses on a gender ambiguous name, Jamie, which contributes to the fear of not fitting in with social ideas of gender presentation. Old Spice’s commercial is analyzed to further develop our case of male degradation solely based on one’s physical stature. Old Spice focuses on a typically feminine market, body care, and uses normative, heterosexual masculinity to sell their product. In 2008 Axe released a body spray labeled Dark Temptation, its slogan implying that it is “as irresistible as chocolate.” Encased in a rather stout container, the prints on it are rather gloomy and reminiscent of the retro era. The commercial for it however, is quite jaunty and upbeat, which makes it unique from earlier commercials they’ve made. Instead of the usual adult movie reference, the Dark Temptation commercial was quite fantasy-esque. It reminded me of the Tin Man walking along the yellow brick road hoping to receive what he desperately needed.…
