Okonkwo Tragic Hero
According to aristotle's definition of a tragic hero, okonkwo is a tragic hero in Things Fall Apart. A man doesn't become a hero until he sees his own downfall. Okonkwo follows the intangibles of a tragic hero established by Aristotle. They include some kind of major flaw, a reversal of fortune because of the hero's error of judgement, and the characters fate being greater than deserved. Okonkwo had many so called flaws. The major one is okonkwo was very inflexible he always wanted to be better than everyone and especially his father. He did not want to be nothing like his father at all. Instead he was the opposite, he worked non stop so much he never really had time to enjoy life at all. Also he only saw his way and was very stubborn,strict …show more content…
Okonkwo made an error by killing the clansman, and the white messanger.As a punishment for killing the tribesman he has to lreave his vlan and go join his mothers Mbanta. Okonkwo leaves his tribe from hierarchy to removed from the tribe. Also, he did kill a white man out of rage. And he didn't think of any of the consequences before he did ny of this, what would happen to him or where he would wind up. And all of these actions caused what happened helped what cause to leading up to his death. And Aristotle's pro was to find the reasons of reversal of fortune , okonkwo does. He sees what he has done looking back at his past killing the messenger, the tribesman, having to leave his tribe. He realizes that and decides to take his own life. He hangs himself. And for being such a birdbrain. And if he wasn't so stubborn, inflexible, maybe all of this would have been avoided, maybe he could of enjoyed life and the simple …show more content…
Okonkwo should of died a hero's death. Okonkwo should of taken two machetes in both hands and run straight at the white people and try to kill as many as he could of. Because he believes that what he believes in is worth dying for and he is right. Since he hanged himself it's not really a hero's death. But how could he die a hero's death since he was really the only one to speak his mind and state what he wanted to say. He was the rock to break the river. He realized that and decided to take his own life and hang himself. He would rather have his fate be decided by his hands rather than the hands of a white man.     One of the main reasons supporting this statement is because Okonkwo was always a coward. Everything he acted on was driven by a fear of appearing weak. What he did not understand was that this mindset automatically makes him weak. A stereotypical hero is brave and overcomes his fears. In the end of the novel, Okonkwo tries to run from his phobia one last time by killing himself and leaving his clan to the colonizing dogs. By doing so, he did not leave a significant impact on his people. Although he attempted to gather them together to fight back against the colonists, he failed and let his anger get the best of him.     He was not respectful to any lazy or unsuccessful men. One ideal example of this is when he hits his wives for not preparing dinner. Okonkwo values being looked as a powerful man and he loses this by his fear of failure and his over excessive pride to do whatever he wants. When realizes that he lost this it leads to his downfall.
