Oil and Gas Industry
Page 1: Introduction
OPITO is the focal point for skills, learning and workforce development in the oil & gas industry. It aims to deliver the right skills for the industry now and in the future. OPITO was established to meet industry demand for a competent and competitive workforce. To achieve this it works with industry employers, training providers and higher education providers.
Careers for life are now relatively rare in the UK. Individuals now have more varied career options, career progression routes and more opportunities. However, as technology is constantly changing, the workforce requires ongoing development to ensure employees have the correct skills to perform their job role effectively.
The oil and gas industry is a diverse sector that operates globally, both onshore and offshore. Over 400,000 people are employed in the UK industry alone with the majority of those employed onshore. Both offshore and onshore environments offer a wide variety of roles from drilling to design, accounts to engineering and HR to PR.
Meeting standards
All activity within the industry must conform to specified industry standards. These standards ensure a safe working environment for the oil and gas workforce. OPITO develop training standards in partnership with the industry and work closely with the training providers who deliver the courses to ensure that standards are maintained.
OPITO therefore plays a strategic role in the oil and gas industry through workforce planning and skills development globally. OPITO works with industry employers to allow employees to engage in an ongoing process of professional development. This helps to ensure that organisations have appropriately skilled and qualified workers to help meet their business objectives.
This case study demonstrates how the right people with the right skills ensure that the sector can maximise the recovery of the remaining oil and gas reserves as well as remaining competitive and profitable.

The key economic driver for the Oil Drilling & Gas Extraction Industry, crude oil prices, determines much of its profitability according to supply and demand. Price trends in West Texas Intermediate, a grade of crude oil used as a benchmark in oil pricing, display the growth of its value in the past 3 years and past decade. An average barrel of crude oil grew from $26.18 in 2002 to $61.95 in 2009, $79.48 in 2010, and $94.87 in 2011 (Airlines, 2012). JP Morgan analysts project average annual prices above $99 in upcoming years (Sethuraman, 2012). Such upward growth points to lucrative profits.…

On April 20th, 2010, an oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. As a result, approximately 4.9 billion barrels of oil poured into the gulf over the course of 87 days. This tragedy resulted in lives lost, both human and animal alike, and really brought the issue of off-shore oil drilling to attention. While some may believe that offshore oil drilling may seem like a harmless source of revenue for the United States, it is imperative that citizens realize that drilling does more harm than good. America needs to consider the negative effects of offshore oil drilling on the environment, the economy, and the future.…

To discuss our research question it is necessary to have sound cases. That means cases where business ecosystem are complex and dynamic (in Mintzberg terms, 1979), asking for frequent changes in technology and in offers. Engineering services for Petrobras fits this panorama for three reasons: i) it is a complex activity, involving a myriad of variables; ii) the recent discoveries of oil in ultra-deep sea (the so-called pre-salt, more than 2,000 meters of water plus more than 1,000 meters of sediments and more than 2,000 meters of salt, more than 300km far from the shore) challenges engineering activities, since there is no similar experience in the world;…
