In the first four paragraphs of Chapter four, the reader is already aware of how lonely and broken, both physically and mentally, Crooks is. However, he is clever and proud. Crooks, “the negro stable buck” is restricted from communicating with the other workers as he had “his bunk in the harness room" which means that he is isolated from the other workers. The fact that he is the only black worker on the ranch shows him to be of some insignificance, meaning that he is not important enough to have a living space separated from the working environment. The way he is so ostracised results in his lonesomeness; he resents this.…

Her relationship with others isn’t very positive at all. She approaches the men at the ranch under the pretext of looking for her husband, “Any you boys seen Curley?”, although it is apparent that she just wants to flirt with them. These men call her “rattrap” and “jail bait”, though this turns out to be true as Lennie is lured by her. They also call her a “God damn tramp”; the men are disgusted by her using her sexuality to get attention. It’s mainly Candy who calls her these things, for example, “tart” this word suggests that she presents herself in a flamboyant manner. No one seems to care about her, not even Curley – when he finds his wife dead, he decides to kill Lennie instead of staying with her. “I’m gonna kill that big son of a bitch. I’ll shoot him in the guts. Come on you guys.” - I got the impression that he sounded almost excited when he said…

Candy’s dog parallels Candy’s plight. Though the pet was once “... the best damn sheep dog” as Candy states, it was put out once it stopped being productive. Candy realizes that his fate is to be put on the roadside as soon as he’s no longer useful; on the ranch, he won’t be treated any differently than his dog. Worse than the dog parallel, though, is that Candy (unlike his dog) is emotionally broken by this whole affair. He can’t bring himself to shoot his pet himself, and we suspect this is going to be the same fear that keeps him from making anything more of his life. Candy can’t stand up for his pet because Candy can’t stand up for himself.…

An aging ranch handyman, Candy lost his hand in an accident and worries about his future on the ranch. Fearing that his age is making him useless, he seizes on George’s description of the farm he and Lennie will have, offering his life’s savings if he can join George and Lennie in owning the land. The fate of Candy’s ancient dog, which Carlson shoots in the back of the head in an alleged act of mercy, foreshadows the manner of Lennie’s death. He is an old man that is missing a hand. He is an outcast and is discriminated against. He offers his life savings to George and Lennie to help finance their dream. He wants to be…

Candy is lonely because of his old age. He is rejected by the people of the ranch due to him being old and handicapped. His only company is his faithful dog companion who later in the story is killed by Carlson. Candy response was "You seen what they done to my dog tonight? They says he wasn't no good to himself nor nobody else. When they can me here I wisht somebody'd shoot me. But they won't do nothing like that. I won't have no place to go, an' I can't get no more jobs.”(Steinbeck, 60) This quote really symbolizes the suffering that Candy goes through and how the men were willing to kill the old dog, while letting the old guy suffer. This also leads to Candy wanting to join George and Lennie on there dream to own their own ranch.…

Bob Sapp as Jim. Sapp is a tall, very muscular man. He is thirty-nine years old, and stands at six foot, five inches tall, and weighs in at three hundred thirty-nine pounds. He is a professional actor and fighter. His most famous role is as the football player Switowski in the remake of The Longest Yard. Jim is an uneducated slave, and Switowski is also uneducated, which Sapp played very well. I imagined Jim as a larger man, which Sapp fits perfectly. Although he hasn’t had extensive work, I believe Sapp could handle the role well.…

Furthermore, his physical appearance is significant, the way he ‘stood in the doorway’ shows that his arrival is important and he does not go unnoticed. His crushed ‘Stetson hat’ and combed ‘long, black damp hair’ contrast to the austere conditions of the American depression. This suggests that Slim carries a positive and proud attitude even in the harshness of the ranch hands lives. Similarly, his position, ‘the jerkline skinner’ portrays him as a leader, who has power over the other men.…
