Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is a novel that draws many emotions out of the reader. This story tells about two men, George and Lennie, who travel for work. Lennie is assumed, by readers, to be mentally disabled. He is not very smart, does not remember or understand many things and the other characters in the story comment on him being like a kid or childlike. George sacrifices continually through the entire story. He sacrifices not only the opportunity to have a better job but he also sacrifices himself. He shows his unconditional loyalty to Lennie even though it comes with a high price. The dialogue in this story allows the readers to make many assumptions about characters and setting. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck dialogue shows the education and common knowledge of the characters as well as setting. “‘ An I coulda sat in them big hotels, an’ had pitchers took of me. When they had them previews I coulda went to them, an’ spoke in the radio, and it wouldn't cost me a cent because I was in the pitcher.’”(Page 89) The characters in this story are all uneducated and of the working class. The only exception is Curley's wife who is just uneducated. It is important for the reader to understand this about the characters. The lack of education held by the farmers affects how they reacted to situations that they did not understand completely. An example of this that readers will quickly pick up on is how they treat Lennie. From the very beginning of the story Lennie is assumed to be stupid. Due to the lack of education and understanding from the others they do not understand that he is mentally handicapped and not dumb. Also because they are of the working classes there is no money to put towards a doctor who would probably likely assume that he is crazy bassed on the possible time period. This time period could also be assumed by the dialogue. The element of dialogue is a very broad piece of the story. It can tell virtually anything about all or one of the characters. This novel evokes feelings by possessing a strong theme which readers will relate to . Theme in this story weaves effectively with symbolism and dialogue to build intensity. This novel is about two men who travel for work and always have a difficult time keeping said job because of Lennie who is mentally disabled, but no one understands that. The other characters do not understand of Lennie. The only person who cares for Lennie and looks out for him is George. George is always taking care of him and is extremely self sacrificing. This book is very moving. The theme is universal and the symbolism allows the reader to foreshadow what will happen to characters. Dialogue is this story tells the readers important information and allows them to make countless inferences about the characters and setting. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is a short story that readers could read from beginning to end without putting it down. This story is deeply engaging but it is not for readers who do not want to understand a deeper meaning besides what is on the page. This story is build on between the line understanding. This story would be great for readers who enjoy a little bit of suspense but wants action
