Oedipus Flaws Essay
Inner blindness and various flaws that Oedipus possesses, has caused his downfall and led to his status as a static character. A static character is a character who does not experience a major change throughout a literary piece. Oedipus had numerous opportunities to change his ways but unfortunately, never yielded himself to the needed change. Oedipus could have made one different choice and he would have had many different chances to change his ways. Oedipus’s downfall was caused by his inability to see and change his flaws.

Unknown to Oedipus, these travelers also included his real father, King Laius. Oedipus was already angry from leaving his “mom and dad” and His violent, rash filled temper led him to kill his real father King Laius and all of his men, except for one. Oedipus continues to show his anger when he taunted and mocked
Tiresias' blindness. Tiresias fights back by telling Oedipus, that he was blind to the corruption in his own life. Finally, when Oedipus dealt with Creon, Oedipus acts unreasonable and was unable to control his temper and anger.
Oedipus’s next flaw would have to be him always being prideful. Oedipus was first prideful when he had defeated the Sphinx. Oedipus defeated the Sphinx by solving the brilliant riddle. When Oedipus defeated the Sphinx, he rose to great power, and the
people thought him to be a man who was beyond all of the power. Following the great defeat of the Sphinx, Oedipus thought of himself as Oedipus the Almighty. Another example of Oedipus’s enormous pride and ego was when he thought himself to be better than the gods and the prophets and furthermore did not need the gods.
