Horney illustrates her points by first introducing a theory by explaining it and then giving examples. She first gives the Freudian theories and then expands on them with her own new theories and ideas. She uses hypothetical situations to inform the reader of how the theories work in real life. She also gives her own opinions to communicate her points.
Horney?s word choice in the essay is a more refined tongue, not in the vernacular. She speaks scholarly and learned and if you are not familiar in some physco lingo you might have to use the dictionary to look up a few unknowns. She also speaks in the 1st person while explaining some of her opinions giving it a little bit more of a personal edge where as in the beginning a more cold and distant tone.

In Freud’s Interpretation of dreams, precisely, from the Oedipus complex, discusses how emotions, desire, and thoughts are harbored in our unconscious. The Oedipus complex focuses on how a child wants to have sexual relationship with his or her parent of the opposite sex. However, it is believed that the Oedipus complex begins in the phallic stage. 1) What were your initial thoughts about the character of Oedipus? My own initial thought about Oedipus is that he is very nice towards his “parents” because he thinks he will be saving his family and not killing his father. Then when he kills the king I was wondering why he would start a fight to the death when they could have just solved it peacefully. Then I thought he was very stuck up and spoiled because he became king for getting rid of the Sphinx and was very stubborn to his brother-in-law (uncle). Then I thought that he needs to stop talking and listen to his own thoughts and think everything threw.…

Oedipus The King is most likely one of the greatest tragedies ever recorded. This play tells the story of the great downfall of a once honored king who by the end of the story, becomes a great curse. This is mainly due to his great sense of pride. It was believed by the Greeks that people with this immense pride thought that they were above the gods. Aristotle believed that the protagonist of every tragedy must have some type of tragic flaw that will eventually lead to his demise. To Oedipus ,of Oedipus The King, pride is his tragic flaw that leads to his downfall. Some examples of his pride taking over him were: when he correctly answered the Sphinx’s riddle, when he abandoned his adoptive parents in Corinth, and when he killed Laius in the crossroads.…

Freud’s psychoanalytic theory is linked to ideas surrounding infantile sexuality. Children pass through stages of development and experience an unconscious conflict at each stage. In the first five years there is the Oral stage, Anal stage and Phallic stage. The Phallic stage is a key stage. During this stage gender divisions occur which lead to children developing gender identity (males develop masculine behaviour and females develop feminine behaviour). This occurs due to the resolution of the Oedipus and Electra complexes.…

1. Mother, monogamy, romance. High spurts the fountain; fierce and foamy the wild jet. The urge has but a single outlet. My love, my baby. No wonder those poor pre-moderns were mad and wicked and miserable. Their world didn’t allow them to take things easily, didn’t allow them to be sane, virtuous, happy. What with mothers and lovers, what with the prohibitions they were not conditioned to obey, what with the temptations and the lonely remorses, what with all the diseases and the endless isolating pain, what with the uncertainties and the poverty—they were forced to feel strongly. And feeling strongly (and strongly, what was more, in solitude, in hopelessly individual isolation), how could they be stable?…
