Oedipus And Creon Influence On Society
All of us learn from experiences and are greatly influenced by the people and society around us, through the sociological perspective. Some of us are even told were just like our mothers or fathers, despite not necessarily trying to be. Oedipus accidentally fulfilled the prophecy, despite his efforts not to, that he would kill his father and marry his mother, and would bring disaster to his city and his family. When they discovered what had happened, his wife hanged herself, and Oedipus gouged out his own eyes. They had had four children together. Antigone being one of those children, had her own story that I believed resulted immensely from her father’s actions. Creon is the ruler of Thebes where Antigone dwells. Oedipus's sons, Eteocles and Polynices shared the rule jointly until they faught, and Eteocles expelled his brother. The two brothers agreed to alternate rule each year, but Eteocles decided not to share power with his brother after his tenure was expired. Polynices left the kingdom and gathered an army and attacked the city of Thebes. The Thebans won the war, but both sons of Oedipus were killed, leaving Creon as ruler again. Creon gives Eteocles a full and honorable burial, but orders that Polynices' corpse be left to rot on the battlefield as punishment for his treason. Antigones’ family history didn’t only affect her its most of the reason why her brothers ended up the way they did. Antigones’ value of family outweighed her value of the law and respecting her soon- to – be father in laws wishes. For many now, the law may outweigh the other values. Another huge factor in Antigone killing herself was that both her parents did also. Which even today may not be too far off. When things become a “norm” in our personal environment it makes it easier for us when situations fall into place for us to choose certain actions over

Oedipus had a mayor role on Antigone’s life; they were similar in some ways. When Oedipus was king of Thebes he was a noble man in every sense of the word. Surely, he belonged to the high class by being the king, but also he was a nobleman in the sense that he had that special connection with his people and that they also loved and appreciated their King, so he had that special respect from his people. In fact, Antigone had the same thing that his father had. She was appreciated by the people of Thebes and even more by doing something that the people wouldn’t dare but share the same thought and opinion towards the body of Polyneices and deserving a proper burial like everyone else. As a matter a fact, they are hardheaded. At first, because Oedipus didn’t want to listen to Tiresias and after, Antigone didn’t want to listen anything that Ismene had to say. Moreover, they are very loyal with their family, that the most important thing for them. Characteristics like this made Antigone who she is and made her do the decisions that she made and not regret…

This essay is to discuss the multilayered motives that drive Antigone to action. After loosing her mother to sucided, her father and her twin brothers, Antigone and her sister Ismene are the last of the Labadcus family (a royal family). When we are introduced to Antigone she is accompanied by only her sister who then rejects Antigone’s request to bury their brother together, leaving Antigone alone in her task against a whole city of people that will obey Kreon. Moreover Antigone is a minority in the majority; in a time where women were expected to obey patriarchal society and had no medium to express their political opinions, Antigone believes in order to honor the god’s decree, she has no other option than to obey her uncle, which contributes to why she resorts to such drastic members. Also perhaps it is because, as a child of Oedipus, she feels her future is ill-fated, “Ismene . . . of all the evils that descend from Oedipus do you know one that Zeus does not fulfill for us, the two still living?” (1-4), causing her to take her future in her own hands since she is already doomed and decides to die for a worthy cause.…

Antigone is a strong-minded young woman, who forgoes the laws of society to honour her deceased brother with a proper burial. After mourning the deaths of her parents and two brothers, Antigone no longer has a jest for life. Antigone is only concerned with avenging the laws against her brother, even though it means she will put her own life in jeopardy. When speaking with Creon she immediately admits her crimes, “Yes, I confess; I will not deny my deed.” (1503). As Antigone is being sent to her execution, she laments her loss of experience in life. She begins to show…

Throughout the play, Antigone changes from being overconfident to regretting what she did. Her deep loyalty to her family led her to commit acts of civil disobedience, which brought these changes in her character, as well as tragedy for everyone involved. As exemplified in Antigone’s character, it is ok to commit a crime as long as you are doing it for what you believe is right.…

“It’s not who I am underneath. But what I do that defines me” (Bruce Wayne). Just like Bruce Wayne, the actions Antigone takes define who she truly is, in this case, as a loving sister who wants to bury her brother lost in war. In the play Antigone, by Sophocles, Antigone commits actions that can be deemed immoral; however, as the presentation of her character progresses throughout the play, those actions she committed can also then be viewed in a way that makes readers sympathize with her in a way which otherwise they might have not.…

Polyneikes had rebelled against Thebes, while Eteokles remained loyal to his family’s home. Kreon, Uncle to Polyneikes, Eteokles, Antigone and Ismene, has seized the throne and as a result of Polyneikes’ betrayal, declared a law that he shall not be buried nor shall he be honored. Antigone and her only remaining sibling, Ismene, have reacted completely differently to this decree; Antigone reacts with reckless abandon, and Ismene simpers in the face of her new King.…

If she had been pliant and had conformed to the laws of Creon she would not have died. Antigone had a separate opinion on the matter and “she has never learned to yield” (II, 86). She was completely shameless in burying her brother and denied nothing. Actually, when her sister Ismene offered to keep Antigone’s actions a secret, Antigone thundered, “Oh tell it! Tell everyone” (Pro 76)! She “dared” to defy Creon, and did not fear the consequences of her actions (II, 65). She even put her pride above Creon as she said, “Creon is not strong enough to stand in my way” (Pro,…

The difficult decision the character of Antigone has to make is whether or not she should bury her brother and please the Gods, or remain obedient towards Creon and the ruling powers of Thebes. The question arises of who Antigone respects and honors more: her mortal or immortal ruling powers. Antigone believes that any punishment she will receive in her mortal life the gods will prevent and intervene due to the fact that she has decided to please the almighty powers, the ancient Greek gods. For this reason, Antigone defies Creon and buries Polyneices, believing she is invincible because she is pleasing the gods and therefore has the gods on her…

A person can't be flawless, and Antigone is far from it. Even with all her strengths, she has many weaknesses. For one, she overlooks other people's feelings. During the play, she causes the death of three people: herself, Haemon & Haemons mother. During the whole ordeal, she only thought about herself and her mission, disregarding other people's feelings. She knew she was going to die for her actions and even said it to Ismene, but she failed to think of what was going to happen to her fiancé, her sister and the family in general. In addition, her sisters' refusal to help her did anger her, but what even made her angrier was the fact that she pleaded guilty when Creon accused her of helping Antigone. She did not want anybody else sharing the blame and, at the same time, the pride of doing what she did. In the end, she wanted her fifteen minutes of fame more than anything. In my opinion, she does it more out of duty to the Gods than for love of her…

After hearing of the sentencing, Tiresias comes to the throne to speak with the king, along side him, a small boy as an escort. This old prophet is a blind man that in the end of the story, is proven to see better than most able-bodied men of 30 years younger than that of himself. Tiresias proves to the king that gods are not on his side and Creon changes his mind. His final decision is too late. He leaves the throne to personally bury Polynices and speak with Antigone in the cave he sentenced her to die in. He finds that Antigone had hung herself and his own beloved son is no charging at him in full fury but then his blood is spilt at the mercy of his own blade. Meanwhile, back at the throne of King Creon, Eurydice is walking by a room where she hears men speaking of her dead son. She enters the room, where the king's cabinet awaits. The play, Antigone, written around 422 B.C. by the author Sophocles, is the first of the three Theban plays written by this author. Although it was the first written, Antigone is the third in the series coming after the plays Oedipus Rex and Oedipus at Colonus. This play follows the story of a girl, Antigone; and the king of the city of Thebes, Creon, who both have different beliefs about Antigone’s dead brother Polyneices. Creon makes a rule that no one can bury Polyneices because he was a traitor to the city and attacked it with an enemy army. So as an insult to him, he will not permit his burial. Antigone, on the other hand, believes that even though what he did is wrong, that family is family and she has a right to bury him. She does so, defying Creon’s law, but gets caught in the act and Creon sentences her to death. With this decision, he refuses to let go of, we see Creon’s contradictory opinions: on loyalty, by wanting what is best for the city yet he kills their princess, he kills his own son’s bride to be; he pays more attention to himself and what he says is best for the city, rather than his own family, especially his wife.…
