Odyssey Character Analysis
A leader is a person who commands a group or organization. All leaders have power although some may have more than others. If a leader doesn’t know how to control their power it can lead to chaos within the people they are governing over/ ruling. Stockton and Homer both have a similar style of writing by using the opposite of an idea to prove their opinion. The selection “The Lady or The Tiger” is more effective at communicating the author’s message than “The Odyssey Book XII” because Frank R. Stockton displays the actions of an irresponsible leader who abuses their power for their own pleasure even if it is not the best for their kingdom.

In “The Lady or The Tiger” the semi barbaric king is the leader of a despairing kingdom. Stockton describes a good leader by giving an example of the opposite of one. Stockton writes, “He was greatly given to self-communing, and when he and himself agreed upon anything, the thing was done” (Stockton 139). If a person isn’t self-communing they are open minded to people ideas and opinions. This proves that Stockton believes that a responsibility of a good leader is one who allows the citizens of the kingdom to express their ideas about laws or rulings, before they are passed. Another example is,” This was the king’s semi-barbaric method of administrating justice. Its perfect fairness is obvious” (Stockton 140). Stockton argues that another main responsibility of a good leader is that if their needs to be a trial of any kind it should be fair and not based on fate. The arena is a method for the king to not be blamed for the outcome although amused at the same time. A leader’s obligation is to have a fair system of laws without segregation of any kind. Stockton’s style of writing his opinion of the responsibilities of a good leader is very different from most other writers because he writes the opposite.
