One example of this is when they are passing the sirens and he tells his crew “you are to tie me up, tight as a splint...and if I shout and beg to be untied, take more turns of the rope to muffle me.” Odysseus was willing to withstand the sirens’ song on his own ,while his crew got earplugs. He protected his crew whenever he got the chance. He kept his promise to Penelope by never giving up on his journey home. This also inspired his crew to continue on the journey.
Atticus Finch, a father and lawyer from a small town, is a hero to many people. He inspires Scout and Jem to always do the right thing because he raised them that way. He once told Scout “I do my best to love everybody.” He never had prejudice towards anybody. He told his kids “there’s nothing more sickening to me than a low-grade white man who’ll take advantage of a negro’s ignorance.” This is why he defended Tom Robinson in court. The whole time Odysseus was trying to get home, he had many opportunities to display these traits, for example giving Polyphemus the wine to put him asleep showed his intelligence because this was the best way to injure the giant while causing the least amount of death. When he hung from the fig tree and waited for his ship, or being trapped in Polyphemus’s cave are all obstacles that he had to overcome. What is your definition of a hero? It is definitely not a man with supernatural powers that can fly or have unhuman super strength. Many believe this is the case, but the definition is definitely the opposite of this one. A hero would be someone who has courage and has risked or sacrificed his life for others to achieve greatness. A hero to others is a person that has discovered or achieved something outstanding. A hero was a leader who not only had physical strength, but mental strength as well. “He” was usually someone that got themselves into danger, and in cases where the average man would suffer, the hero would have enough stamina to survive. Odysseus shows all of these signs and has achieved greatness because of these characteristics.…
