Odwalla Juice Recall Crisis
Individual Case Analysis

Companies in Crisis- What to do when it all goes wrong?

Discussion Questions:

1. What should the company do regarding the following specific issues? a. Should the company recall all of its fresh apple juice, just those batches considered potentially contaminated, or not recall any of the product?

I think Odwalla should recall all of its fresh apple juice in order to prevent consumers from having to worry about purchasing the product and getting contaminated. Until the problem is solved fresh apple juice should not be distributed.

b. Should the company admit responsibility immediately? If so, then why? If not, the why not?

Yes the company should admit responsibility as soon as they are certain that the crisis has occurred so that people see that they are serious and willing to do as much as they can.

c. How should the company address media interviews? What should be said and what should not be said?

The company should be honest and acknowledge that they have made a mistake. On all interviews the company should express sympathy and regret for those affected and immediately promise that the company will pay all medical costs associated with the crisis. The company should also say the latest news on the crisis and ensure the public that the company has a handle on the problem. Listing places customers can ask questions and seek help about problems related to the crisis can be very appreciated by the customers knowing that the company cares about them.

The company should set up a web site explaining what has happened as well as speak to the press and appear on T.V. to reach a great number of people.

d. Write a short press release for the company addressing the outbreak to present on national television?

This consists of step by step processes and policies for the company and the employee’s to follow. In 1984 James E.Grunig and Todd Hunt proposed several theories to crisis management of large companies. Two major parts are the apologia theory and the image restoration theory. The very basis of these theories is a proper response of the company towards the public (customer) and political audience (James Grunig as cited by Kathleen Fearn-Banks, 2007) Learning from the Valdez fiasco in 1989 authors like Steve Adubato (2008) stated that understanding the narrow window of opportunity to react is crucial for a successful crisis management. To show genuine concern for the situation it is important to send a high representative to the scene on short notice (Steve Adubato, 2008, p.24). Showing responsibility and direct reaction are also seen as most important in a crisis situation by…

Companies have affected their customers negatively in many, many ways by being careless, negligent and putting out products that can be tainted or altered in some way and have been very harmful to one 's health even to the point of death by use. Many people are unaware of some recalls and continue to use whatever product it is that is defective or contaminated. I will be talking about a couple of different companies and touching on what they have done or not done in order to correct a problem with their product/s that have been recalled. There are a lot of reasons as to why companies do not take action right away such as losing profits, losing customers, being sued or even going bankrupt. Having a positive image is should be on the top of the ethics list.…

Unfortunately this is a reality for all businesses. For the past few years a crises has happened for most companies. The biggest one that stuck out to me was the Crisis at Chipotle. They kept quiet for a couple days which made people mad until they finally took action. Businesses should not try to let the problem pass until everyone forgets. Even if it’s 1 person that it affected, it can spread like a fire.…

Business isn’t always about staying on top and trying to beat out the competition or make a name for the company. Sometimes, the issue can be simply staying afloat when harder times come. Businesses occasionally go through situations that could threaten or harm people or property, interrupt business, damage reputation or negatively impact share value. These situations make up the definition of a crisis. Every organization is vulnerable to crisis, whether that organization is large, small, successful, or just getting off the ground. Crisis is something that can determine whether a company will last or simply die out in the near future, so businesses should prepare themselves for times like these. Businesses that have failed because of crises, in the past, seemed to have lacked in proper crisis communication. Without adequate communication, operational response will break down, stakeholders usually react negatively in a confused panic, and the organization will be perceived as inept and criminally negligent (Brice). In order to better prepare for times of crisis, there are eight basic steps that have been implied by businesses that have overcome crises in the past. They require advance work in order to minimize damage, because more damaged is incurred if a business takes longer to respond to a crisis.…

    a. I believe that they took the right approach by training the executives first. In order for the company to realize what they were doing wrong the top employees in the company had to realize the problems that they were having with their customer service. Once they identified the problem it is important for them to find a solution to the problem, and to reset their goals in order to fix the problem, and then setting new goals for the rest of the organization to follow that starts from the very top and trickles down to the bottom so the changes can be established throughout the whole company.…
