We are charged to ensure that these products are safely returned when the trade show is over. “Less than 17% of African-American and Latino students will finish high school and graduate from college.” (Landy, 2013) Less than 70% of students in Milwaukee graduate from high school. (Pathways PowerPoint, 2013) Only a little over 25% of the people in Wisconsin hold a four-year college degree. (O’Connell, 2014) This educational disparity leads to economic disparity which affects the entire state, not just the urban areas with a higher achievement gap since most jobs with an annual salary over $30,000 will require a four-year degree. (Winters, 2014) There is a program called Pathways to College that is working hard to change these shocking statistics. We are here tonight to show you that Pathways to College is a cause worthy of your and your organization’s time, talent, and treasure.…

Institutional racism and social injustices have not only had lasting negative impact on Blacks but on our society as a whole. These injustices have intentionally or unintentionally provided additional barriers to retention and graduation for Black student success, in particular Black males. Most Black students enter college at a disadvantage being first-generation, low-income and/or under-prepared for the rigors of college. Black student success has been historically marginalized and considered unachievable on many university campuses throughout the US and as academic advisors we are tasked with increasing retention and increasing graduation rates for “all students”. Research has consistently shown black student’s success has been harder to…

Whenever I hear the phrase "college isn't for everyone" my mind cringes at the thought of all the lazy people who walk amongst this earth. There are many things people deal with on an everyday basis that "aren't for everyone". Cancer isn't for everyone, losing a loved one isn't for everyone, and being put in situations, you don't ask to be put in certainly aren't for everyone. However, as human beings, we have to continue living our lives to the best of our ability. There are no excuses in the real world. There are no excuses to not have a decent education in order to make a living in our country. Some may not like the system but that's the way it works. If you have an education, more times than not you'll make enough money to get by. If you don't, you will be left with an underpaying job which usually involves hard work, and you will be the one petitioning for $15 an hour minimum wage. Education is important and sometimes a wake-up call is needed in order for people to realize this. I was one of…

The goal of academia is to create an atmosphere that allows individuals to seek truth, discover knowledge, and stimulate an ongoing dialogue of inquiry that challenges the status quo (Kaplin & Lee, 2007). To support these ideas, faculty academic freedom, freedom of expression, and the student’s right to freedom of speech are protected by the Constitution’s First Amendment in public institutions. Understanding these concepts have significance for emerging effective community college leaders. The assigned scenario depicts a professor whose controversial book and perspectives of homosexuality not only upset the classroom but spilled out onto campus in the form of rallies and protests. This paper will explore the issues that administrators should consider when responding to incidents of academic freedom and speech for faculty and students.…

My primary advice for students would be to ignore the admissions statistics on the standardized scores of enrolled students. Too often, prospective students limit their choices of colleges purely based on a numeric value. It is unfair, unjust, and unnecessary to sum up a student's life experiences, zealous passions, and unique personality to a score obtained from a dull, standardized, four-hour test. Too often students hold themselves to a numeric standard and base limit their applications to colleges that reflect their own scores. Universities admit human beings with personalities, interests and hobbies. Universities do not admit 2400 SAT or 36 ACT.…
