Objectivism
All philosophies on life have their own theory on how to view the world. With an objectivist view on existence, everything happens for a reason. Through human’s perception, knowledge gives them contact with truth. Objectivism provides people with happiness through their own achievement therefore; individual rights are very well respected. Ayn Rand believed that someday all humans will survive under her objectivist view. Within her fictional story, “The Fountainhead” and Tobias Wolff’s “Old School” aspects of her ideas are given. Although a believable center, Ayn Rand’s objectivism would not be a successful way of living one’s life.
Within “Old School” by Tobias Wolff, the narrator reads Ayn Rand’s “Fountainhead” numerous times. He can’t seem to stop reading it and fantasizes about living his life the way of the main character, Howard Roark. Between a very strong attitude, not giving in to anyone but himself, leading to success as an architect and a lover, Howard Roark is a king. As a teenage boy, the narrator wishes he could be such a hardcore lady-killer. Although, after meeting Rand and hearing her speak about her viewpoints, he begins to see the flaws of objectivism. “It had dawned on me that I didn’t really know anyone like Roark or Dominique. Though Ayn Rand insisted that such people existed and that she herself was one, my own experience of them was purely literary” (Wolff 93). After feeling offended that Ayn Rand would misjudge his own family in a distasteful way before even knowing them, the speaker’s outlook on objectivism is turned around. He beings to really think through her theory and realizes that in order for everyone to live an objectivist life no one would carry many feelings nor would they be compassionate or considerate. “My first reaction was shock—at her unfairness not only to the writer but to a character for whom I had a greater liking. Wretched eunuch, she’d called Jake Barnes, as if the fact of such a wound, of woundedness itself, made him

The dystopian novel “Anthem” by Ayn Rand has many Objectivist political agendas hidden within it. At the beginning of the book, the protagonist, Equality 7-2521, says that all of his crimes are sins. Some examples of these crimes were his acts of individuality, writing, and interacting with those of the other sex outside of the Time of Mating. To the average American, these do not seem like crimes at all, but they are in the extremely communistic society in which Equality 7-2521 lives in. By making this society appear as evil, Ayn Rand was pushing her Objectivist political view. Equality later had a different moral assessment of these “sins” thinking that they were what made life full. Equality’s eventual assessment of his sin was incorrect, because his sins were hurtful to the community of his town, the World Council, and his own standard of living.…

Individuality is a feature that defines us. Individuality is a large aspect of our lives that we do not even realize we have until we see an example of a lack of individuality. Factors that we believe would make us unique compared to everyone else would surely fade away if we were to live in the kind of society that Ayn Rand depicted in her novel, Anthem. This novel demonstrates what life would be like if everyone lost their sense of individuality and had to obey the laws that were set by the government. Struggles regarding this lost privilege are depicted in this dystopian society to present what a loss of individuality would look like if we were to introduce it in our own society. In Ayn Rand’s Anthem, the…

Ayn Rand’s Anthem portrays a scared world with a homogenous culture and mindset, imprisoning its citizens with their thoughts. This imprisoned mindset caused a regression of technology out of fear of being different and the consequences that came with that. When an individual is erased to be a part of a whole and they are not allowed to question what is “known” nothing new can come about without retaliation, which is depicted in Equality’s story of the society he lived in. Equality 7-2521, a street sweeper, is about to challenge the morality and ethics of his society. In Anthem the rules and restrictions of the society stifled the questioning of established “norms,” showing that to progress, people must be allowed to be individuals, people must be allowed to question, and they must not be afraid to stand alone.…

“It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon paper no others see.” “It is a sin write this.” So begins Ayn Rand’s Anthem, a dystopian novella convening the life of Equality7-2521, The Unconquered, Prometheus. In the society one must not think alone, speak alone, act alone, one must not exist alone. For, this is not right, “We,” is right. “We” can exist in society and thrive! Save, Equality7-2521, who wrote his inherent thoughts for only himself to see, “it was a sin to write this.” Rand illustrates a motif of conformity through dystopian diction in Anthem, which creates a tone of fear and foreshadows an impending revolution, which reveals the importance of individuality for one to be happy.…

Ayn Rand used her experience of moving to America where she could voice her opinions freely, by expressing that through Equality 7-2521 attempt to reach freedom. Rand was trapped in the autocratic rule of the Romanov Dynasty in the early 1900, as were Equality 7-2521 in their society. Equality 7-2521 knew they were outsiders to the rest since they let themselves be curious, “may knowledge come to us! What is the secret our heart has understood and yet will not reveal to us, although it seems to beat as if it were endeavoring to tell it?” (Rand Part 10). They went against what was enforced in order to feel something that gave them freedom from the conformed ideals. Equality 7-2521 saw the wonders curiosity gave. They accepted the fact that is wrong to do it, but they didn’t care. It was a gift to them to think beyond what was taught, and to see what the world really had to give, “And now I see the face of god, and I raise this god over the earth, this god whom men have sought since men came into being, this god who will grant them joy and peace and pride” (Rand Part Eleven). Seeing what was taken away from them gave them so much power. Equality 7-2521 was no longer thinking about what make society equal, but more about themselves and the power of an individual’s brain. Rand saw how the Romanov’s didn’t want success in a society…

Ayn Rand's novel Anthem presents an anti-utopian society with a collectivist government. In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand there are many themes. These themes include love, Desire, Freedom and individuality. Most of these themes can be shown by the characters in the book. The theme of individuality is shown by Equality 7-2621.Anthem is a novel about a man who overruled the government to gain knowledge of the outside world. My thesis statement is every individual should be their own person and have in control of themselves. One example of my thesis is when Equality 7-2621 left the city and decided what was best for him and his family.…

Ayn Rand constructed “a philosophy for living on earth” (Ayn Rand, 111) to abide by based on her own opinions she had formulated since living in a communist society and coming to the West. She called this philosophy objectivism and it most evidently stays away from focusing on the whole. Objectivism is centered on the individual and reason, “the faculty that identifies and integrates the material provided by man’s senses” (Ayn Rand, 112). Throughout the book, Anthem, objectivism is expressed in all aspects and is used to tell what is benevolent and what is bad.…

She also wrote and essay called How Does One Lead A Rational Life In an Irrational Society?. Advice that Ayn Rand provides in that essay is something I think Equality 7-2521 would definitely take. The main point in the essay is that "one must never fail to pronounce a moral judgment.", and that is exactly what Equality 7-2521 did. He left the city, learned all about the forbidden word, and planned to start a new city. Anthem states, "When I shall have read all the books and learned my new way.. I shall steal one day.. into the cursed city of my birth.. I shall call to me the men and women whose spirit has not yet been killed." (100-101). He will pronounce his moral judgement to other brave souls of that city. In How Does One Lead A Rational Life In an Irrational Society? , Ayn Rand says, ".. to pronounce a moral judgement is an enormous responsibility.. one needs an un-breached integrity that is the absence of any indulgence in conscious.. An Irrational society of moral cowards.. such a society is ready to be taken over.." (1-2). He is planning to create a new city where people can freely express themselves. He says, ".. I shall lead them to my fortress.. I and they, my chosen friends, my fellow-builders, shall write the frist chapter in the new history of man." (101). By doing this, he is taking Ayn Rands advice in her…

Ayn Rand was a Russian-born American novelist, philosopher, playwright, and screenwriter that wrote a book called "Anthem". This fiction book, Anthem, is about a 21 year old guy named Equality 7-2521, who lives in a restricted area full of limits. He isn't suppose to write about anything, which he is in this story. He writes his story in a tunnel under the earth by a candlelight. He isn't suppose to put himself first in any sort of way. He uses plural nouns such as "we, he, they" to describe himself. He was raised without any of his parents but all children in his society.…

“You have to find what sparks a light in you so that you in your own way can illuminate the world.” Oprah Winfrey often speaks about finding your own path and not allowing others to dictate your life. The story of Anthem by Ayn Rand, is the exact opposite of what Oprah stands for. Rand tells the story of a young man named Equality 7-2521, it being written from his point of view. Equality has shown to commit many “sins” throughout the course of his life. He feels as though what the council decides of his fate is a punishment for his sins, of which he is grateful. However, Equality soon wants to prove that he is scholar worthy, and that he should be promoted. He is led by the word “ego,” his thoughts and actions are to often better himself rather than the group of individuals. For this Equality has been shown to be an individual in his quest to learn for himself, as well as his need to improve his understanding of the world.…

Ayn Rand writes mainly about the status quo and what and who is to be blamed for such circumstances. She talks of a miseducation so ingenious that when one reads about it one simply gets baffled as he is forced to look into his own experiences from the home, to the school, to the Church and in the province or in the city. One can expect to see various parallelisms with how he is brought up and what he is usually told by his superiors. The reason for these apparent similarities, I think is that aside from the ‘system’ that almost each person is forced into; there is something common in every one of us. This is what makes us man, Rand says, our capability to be rational.…

“I have found that such an object has always been attended with such an effect, and I foresee, that other objects, which are, in appearance, similar, will be attended with similar effects”. This foretells that with knowledge, our society may be able to associate a certain aspect/detail with an object, but that does not necessarily mean it will always happen. Therefore, Hume, who starts out as an empiricist, has arrived at the conclusion where an individual may not have knowledge at all, of skeptic doubt. This is explored through the three epistemology questions, the process he did take, and what the reader thinks on the matter.…
