America: Land of the Overweight “Would you like to Super-Size that Sir?” And how many times do we reply “Yea Sure.” I mean its only twenty cents more right? This is just one small look into the world we live in today. No matter what your age, every American is faced with the choice of eating healthy or to often is the case; succumb to the temptation of eating fattier foods. In recent decades America has faced daunting rise in obesity from children to the elderly; all due part to, poor choices made in every day eating habits, the fast pace life style of our culture, economical turmoil, and commercial businesses with their guileful advertisements, and monopoly of the food industry. In 1990 the Center for Disease Center recorded that obesity was at a slim 12%. This number is a fairly acceptable percentage in a society. This rate has sky rocketed in the past few years. Today the Center for Disease Control reports that the percentage of children from the ages of 6 – 11 has raised from 7% in 1980 to 18%. Also, in the same amount of time the percentage has raised from 5% to 18% in people from the age of 12 to the age of 19. This number seems quite mediocre until you realize that in 2010 it is said that more than one of every three kids is obese. As a whole in America, from the age of 18 and above 35.7% are said to be obese according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Putting the numbers and statistics aside, one must ask them selves, “How can numbers like this inflate so quickly? Why do percentages rise and what causes the rise?” The term “Fast food” is given to any type of food provider that, naturally, can be prepared and served quickly to accommodate the consumer. While sounding like a great facet to a fast paced life style it comes with many compromises; unfortunately that all comes at the consumer’s expense.     Advertising has changed from being honest, concrete, simple, and informative to expensive, symbolic, and appealing to counter-culture. In early decades, commercials conveyed intrinsic benefits of the products.     Obesity is an epidemic in America. It has had an alarmingly growing prevalence rate since the 1960’s: almost 34% for adults alone. The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2010 and rising yearly.     According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, approximately one-third of Americans are obese. There are several culprits to this alarming increase such as lack of exercise, failure to research nutrition information, and modality of convenience. Author of the book, “Fast Food Nation”, Eric Schlosser states the expenditure on fast food annually by Americans, has increased from six billion to 110 billion dollars in the span of approximately three decades.     I’ve done some research on this topic and I came across an article titled “Why We're So Fat: What's Behind the Latest Obesity Rates” and I read that in 1990 not one state in the U.S had an obesity rate greater than 14 percent! The article also says that ten years later more than 20 states where reporting obesity rates between 20 to 24 percent. And in 2010 more than 10 states reported an obesity rate greater than 30 percent.
