Nya's Character Analysis
Nya Nya deals with many problems. Here are some examples of how she persists through them. Let’s start with the very first chapter. This is where her most important situation is. She has to walk twelve hours a day (basically half a day) to get water for her family. Although the text doesn’t tell us how she got through it, it does give us hints. In the last line on page.1, it says’s “[h]eat. Time. And thorns.” This is like saying that she just accepts it. She just takes the heat and thorns and puts in her time of day to do the work. Since she knows her family needs the water throughout the day to cook, clean, and drink. Another example of how she persists through difficulties is in chapters 7 page.39 and chapter 8 page.45. In these chapters, Nya’s sister Akeer is very sick, close to dying even. Nya and her parents are very worried and have to make a major choice. They either need to take her to the clinic that’s a few days walk, and hope she can make it in time or, they can just hope she’ll heal on her own. Eventually, they took “Akeer to the special place-a big white tent…with doctors and nurses”

Now in her story, it doesn’t say why she doesn’t go to school, but in Salva’s point of view, in chapter 1 it states why all the girls don’t go to school, “[h]is two sisters…did not go to school. Like the other girls in the village, they stayed home and learned from their mothers how to keep house” (pages2-3). This probably includes water fetching but in chapter 17 page.103 Nya finally gets a chance to go to school because her village is building one since their water problem got fixed. But unlike Salva and his brothers Nya’s brother Dep doesn’t go to school, although he is allowed to. The school is too far for him to go, but now all the children can go. It’s a fix for all the children boy or girl in the whole
