Whatever your ability & experience, the Sports Department will endeavour to encourage and support your individual needs and requirements. Having made a strong link with Dudley Council Leisure Services and privately owned sports facilities, the following venues have been hired to run our Team Sports programmes: David Lloyd – Raquets Dudley Leisure Centre – Basketball/Netball The Dell Stadium – Cross Country Training, Athletics & Football Dudley College – Fitness Training Dunstall Park Sports Arena Indoor Cricket Village Hotel – Fitness/ Endurance Himley Hall & Baggeridge Country Park – Cross Country Running DK Rugby Club - Rugby We are affiliated with the British Colleges of Sport (BCS). This allows you to compete against the ‘best of the rest’ in the country in a range of sports (see Team Sports brochure for further information). You will be expected to purchase a compulsory uniform as part of the entry requirements to study sport.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
The course is made up of the following Central YMCA Qualifications (CYQ): Anatomy & Physiology for Exercise and principles of exercise & health (This qualification is particularly relevant for individuals seeking basic knowledge in exercise and fitness). Exercise and Fitness knowledge covering: Bones and Joints Muscles and muscle actions Energy Systems The Cardio-respiratory System The Components of Fitness CYQ (NVQ) Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness (This qualification is relevant for individuals in a work place setting who wish to work as gym instructors): Exercise and Fitness Knowledge Basic program writing How to plan, teach and evaluate sessions How to motivate and support clients Reflect on own practice and development

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
The course is made up of the Edexcel NVQ level 2 in Coaching,Teaching and Instruction (5 units): Plan prepare a series of coaching sessions Maintain an environment in which participants can improve their performance Coach Participants to improve their performance Evaluate coaching sessions and develop personal coaching practice Deal with accidents and emergencies Plus: Football Association Coaching Certificate Level 1 Functional Skills First 4 Sport Employment Awareness Level 2 You will be expected to be part of the football team sports programme.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Learners are assessed by a variety of methods including case studies, class based assignments, and time constrained assessments, projects, practical’s and presentations.

You will be expected to be part of the Team Sports Programme.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
You will need 4 GCSEs at Grade D or above including English. OR Pass grade in all elements of the Sport & Active Leisure Foundation Level 1 with an attendance of above 90%. AND a positive reference from existing college tutor/school report.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
You will be assessed through a portfolio of evidence (NVQ element) including work experience and two mulitple choice examinations.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
You will need 4 GCSEs at Grade D or above including English. OR Pass grade in all elements of the Sport & Active Leisure Foundation Level 1 with an attendance of above 90%. OR BTEC Certificate in Personal, Social and Development Level 1 with an attendance of above 90%.. AND Passed Functional Skills at Entry Level 3 in ICT, English and Mathematics.

1 year

WHAT NEXT?
Upon completion of the course you may wish to progress onto BTEC Diploma in Sport Coaching/Sport Science or NVQ Level 3 Football Coaching Apprenticeship.

This qualification is for anyone who is preparing to embark on a career in the Sport and Leisure industry. Mandatory Units: Taking part in Sports Investigating Rights & Responsibilities at work. Managing your Health at work Risks & Hazards in Sport & Active Leisure. Taking part in Exercise & Fitness How the body works Planning a Fitness programme Assisting in Leader of Sports and active leisure activities to plan and deliver an activity. Working in Sport & Active Leisure Sport & Active Leisure group project. Physical Activity for Children Functional Skills: C&G Maths EL3 C&G English EL3 C&G IT EL3 Certificate in Personal & Social development level 1 There will be an opportunity to take part in a residential, activity days and be part of the Team Sports Programme.

This is an excellent qualification if you have any level of sports ability and are interested in improving your performance, enhancing your personal development and gaining an understanding of sports coaching and industry requirements. On this course there is a mix of practical and theory lessons where you will learn about: Fitness Testing and Training Practical Sport Anatomy and Physiology for Sport Injury in Sport Sports Nutrition Planning & Leading Sports activities Exercise & Fitness Instruction You will also be able to study for additional qualifications such as First Aid at Work, F.A Level 1 & Basketball Level 1, as part of your course. There will be an opportunity to take part in a residential, activity days and be part of the Team Sports programme.

Candidates are required to produce a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates achievement of all learning outcomes associated with each unit. Assessment is through a variety of methods such as presentations and written work.

Learners are assessed by a variety of methods including case studies, multiple choice tests, class based assignments and time constrained assessments, projects, practicals and presentations. Each unit is graded as a pass.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
You will need 4 GCSEs at Grade D or above including English OR a BTEC or other equivalent Foundation level course awarded at a pass grade. AND a Functional Skill qualification at Entry Level 3 or Level 1 AND an interest in working within the sports/leisure industry and participation in a variety of sports would be desirable. Prior to enrolment on this course, you will need to have an Initial Assessment in Literacy and Numeracy.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
You should have Entry Level 3 or GCSE’s grade’s F-G, possess a positive school report and attend an interview with the course tutor.You will be asked to take an initial assessment in Literacy and/or numeracy prior to enrolment.

You are required to create a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates achievement of all learning outcomes associated with each unit. Coursework is generated to form your portfolio. A variety of assessment methods are used such as: practicals, presentations, written work, discussions etc.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
This course consists of six mandatory units and twelve specialised units. Each of the units is designed to give students an insight into the sport/fitness industry. The course aims to offer both theoretical and practical lessons to enhance learning within this discipline. The units are: Anatomy for Sport and Exercise Sport and Exercise Physiology Sport and Exercise Psychology Research Methods for Sport and Exercise Research Project in Sport and Exercise Sciences Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise Analysis of Sports Performance Training and Fitness for Sport Sports Nutrition Sports Coaching Sports Injuries Sports and Exercise Massage Current Issues in Sport Exercise Health & Lifestyle Instructing Exercise & Physical Activity Laboratory based methods in Sport Practical Sport Promoting Sports Performance You must undertake Functional Skills in English, ICT or Maths as part of the course.You will be able to study for additional qualifications such as CYQ Gym Instructor Level 2 and Community Sports Leaders Award Level 2. There will be an opportunity to take part in a residential, activity days and be part of the Team Sports Programme.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
You should have one of the following qualifications: 5 GCSEs at grade C or above (English and Maths at grade C is desirable); BTEC at Merit level; NVQ Level 2; or equivalent qualifications. An interest and active participation in sports and fitness is essential along with an interest for the science behind the sport.
